Or as my guy, Andres Torres (on deck) shouted to Aaron Rowand (at the plate) about Edgar Renteria’s home run – “He tol’ me he was gonna do it!”

I never in a million years thought I’d get to go to a World Series game. For real. Amazing.

Before AT&T Park opened (as PacBell Park), my husband bought two seats, two season tickets – not because we thought the Giants were all that – even though they are – but because we love baseball and the park is brilliant. He was there for the first game of the first season – unfortunately I wasn’t because he’d promised a friend that second seat on opening day.

This 2010 has been my favorite, albeit tortuous, season…ever – I love this team of freaks, geeks, rookies and rejects. I have been holding my breath for months, hoping the Giants could pull it off, seeing the potential yet knowing how young some of these players are. We even nicknamed our puppy Buster Nosey. Well, they did it, and damn…winning is sweet.

So, catch up news…speaking of sweet, Charlie at The Smart Girls’ SciFi blog gave my science fiction romance, Captured, a sweet review. http://smartgirlsscifi.wordpress.com/

Susi, The Geeky Bookworm, read my sci fi menage – she’s such a sneak! She called it’s hawt. I have to laugh at myself, I mean, I went for it, and it’s a fun ride, but War and Peace, it’s not. One Four All – in Susi’s words:

“OMG this one was hawt. As the name implies we have a Menage à Quatre in this one. We are thrown into a foreign world and discover it’s secrets while watching this rather hot relationship develop. I loved how Ms Barrett succeeded in making her characters so real and unique. For me it’s always like reading about real persons- their conversations and behavior is something I could imagine happening in real life too, beside the actual 4 lover part- I’m not sure that this would work out- but a nice fantasy nonetheless.” She says she’ll be posting a full review sometime soon.

Sandra Cox has read and reviewed the first two books of my four-part science fiction series – Daughters of Persephone, Exile and Return. She’s posting it Wednesday at her place: http://sandracox.blogspot.com/ I know she and I would both appreciate it if you drop by – the review is short.

Oooh, I got some swag! I never get swag, but I won two books this week. Check it out!

I won a copy of Virgin River, by Robyn Carr, from Penelope’s Romance Reviews, which is totally cool because the heroine is a nurse-midwife – which is what I originally trained as.

I also won a copy of Mr. Darcy’s Obsession, by Abigail Reynolds, from Sourcebooks. Cool!

(Had to stick the headlines in there.

Here’s my own quickie review of Linda Howard’s Mr. Perfect – I totally adore Linda Howard and Mr. Perfect is, in many ways, vintage Howard. There are some great visuals, ala, the sexy cop-neighbor love interest hero. I like the mouthy heroine for the most part…occasionally she comes across as a bit much. I think the biggest disappointment for me are the secondary characters. Aside from the hero, who doesn’t play the huge role her usual heroes do – oops, he kind of has a huge role, i.e. , significant attributes, I couldn’t relate to the secondary characters. Ah well…still an enjoyable read overall and one of her books I had not read before.

Oh…she wrote about both the good and the bad in her post, Mood Swings and Reviews. Everything she said resonated with me as I’m stuck in a big fat down period in my life, both as a writer and in general. I’m quoting her:

“You want a look into the writer’s psyche? Here’s your look. We’re mostly solitary people because we hunker behind a computer and pour our hearts into our work. We believe in our characters. We believe in their struggles. We believe they will end up happy, because our faith in those characters is more real than fiction. We hurt for them when they don’t understand their lovers. We laugh when we’re typing a line that came out of nowhere and surprised us with its humor. You have to understand, we aren’t crazy… we just feel and know those characters so well, they are almost real to us. Yes, we know the difference between actual real people and fictitious people. But we created these guys and we care about their stories.

So, when we hear bad things it’s like a knife.”

Her site is well worth the visit and you can read the post for yourself: http://miawatts.blogspot.com/

In other news…you can still be in the running for the tote! Cats not included! And here’s a shot of my new tattoo – not the greatest view but it was hard to hold the camera and push the button with my left hand (yes, those are my jeans and white tee shirt on the floor – just getting into the shower):

“I’m obviously someone who recognizes the sensuality of food…I made the hero and heroine of my first novel (Sweet Inspiration) pastry chefs. When I saw Mandi’s review for Beauty and the Feast, I knew I had to read it. The heroine is a caterer and the hero falls in lust with her before they’ve ever met, just by tasting the incredible meal she has prepared for him. Holy Mother…the food descriptions in this book are to die for! Check out the first course…chilled melon soup: “…pureed honey melon, a tiny bit of sea salt, a few splashes of a light German Riesling, a squeeze of lime, half a seeded Serrano chili, cilantro and a bit of palm sugar…” Starving yet? You will be if you read this baby. Make sure you have a gourmet snack and a nice bottle of wine on hand. I am not kidding.

I love the fact that Barrett has these characters becoming interested in each other without them even meeting. Just the sound of their voices over the phone peaks their interest. Then, Gabe smells Eva’s scent on his pillow and knows she’s laid down on his bed. He starts falling for her after eating the sensual meal she has created for him. This is a great way to start the romantic tension in a book….using other senses to create an attraction between two characters.

Here’s a quote that sums it up best….”His interest in Eva Raines had once again grown in direct proportion to the size of his erection, the erection induced by the images tasting her food brought to mind.”

I really loved this sexy book…I loved the characters, the setting, the food descriptions (of course). It was adorable, right down to the recipes at the end. Bravo, Julia Barrett!”

Grade: A-

Thanks! I am humbled by her review.

As a result, unless a friend writes a menage, I pass right on by without a second glance and yes, I know how popular menage is right now. That message has been drummed into me by many, many writers…editors…advisers.

However, author Mia Watts sends me sliding down that slippery slope toward M/M and Menage without even trying. Because the sex is so great? Well…yeah, that goes without saying, but more because her writing is so evanescent. She writes about love, whether it’s male-male or multiples, like her new work, F.U. I read it in one afternoon.

As I told her, it’s not your usual menage. Most menages that authors send me are about shifters and I rarely read them, other than Fran Lee’s Hallie’s Cats, which is a spicy little number. I skip most shifter menages because after reading a few, I began to feel like the cougar or were or bear should just pee on the woman’s leg and be done with it. The machismo and territory marking become almost comical. And…here’s where the ick factor comes in for me – sometimes the contortions these characters go through during sex are just god-awful unrealistic and flat out painful and I have to assume they are thrown in for shock value.

Here is why Mia’s F.U. multiple, cuz it ain’t menage, works for me.

The story is damn good. The writing, superb. The style, spare, clean and clear. Despite the fact that four men share one woman, there is a building love story between the guy I consider the alpha dog and the woman, who I consider his mate. When he shares her, he still directs all the action. It’s as if the secondary characters, who are drawn quite vividly, are an extension of the alpha dog’s own personality and soul. F.U. may be a multiple, but it’s overarching theme is that of soul mates – two sets of eyes meet across a room and you know to the depths of your soul he or she is the one and it scares the bejeezus out of you. Because there are four men involved, the story could easily have crossed the line into sleazedom, but thanks to the author’s skill at shaping characters and situations, it never does. The female character is an assertive, confident woman and the male characters not only want to fuck her…they respect, cherish and protect her. It’s actually pretty dang cool.

This is probably the only time I’ll ever post something remotely resembling a review because I believe – to each his own and I respect the time and effort writers put into their creations. In this case, I have to tip my hat to Mia Watts. She’s made a believer out of me.
