Still recovering from all recent events.  It’s been a little crazy.  We were down in Oakland last night for a big birthday party.  The band was amazing, but so loud I think I’ve lost a good percentage of my hearing.  I could have danced all night if I wasn’t still so bloody tired!  I feel as if someone – hint hint – should put me in a vampire hidey-hole, and leave me there to sleep for three days.

Charlie was so right!

I ordered a copy of Ritual of Proof the same night I uploaded Charlie’s post about Creative Christmas gift giving.  I found a used paperback copy for $.01.  I’m not a big fan of Regency – there, said it.  There’s nothing wrong with the Regency period or Regency Romances, they simply aren’t my cup of tea.  But…Charlie nailed it when she said Dara Joy turns the Regency on its head.  If she hadn’t said it first, those would be the very words out of my mouth.  It’s like reading a Regency through a glass darkly.  Ritual of Proof is the Alice in Wonderland version of a Regency Romance.  I love it.  Women control the world and men are mere window dressing – and they’re displayed at soirees in the hopes of making a good match.  The book is a joy to read – no pun intended.

Linnea Sinclair’s book is sitting on my bedside table and I just ordered three more used books from Amazon.  I’m reading a lot lately, probably because my attention is pretty fragmented.  I’m trying to convince myself that it’s okay to have several works started and stalled.  Besides, I’m beginning a new project involving Captured that promises to be involving and I hope, worthwhile.  Fingers crossed!

Author Mia Watts is my friend and she’s written a post that felt like a kick in the gut.

Oh…she wrote about both the good and the bad in her post, Mood Swings and Reviews.  Everything she said resonated with me as I’m stuck in a big fat down period in my life, both as a writer and in general.  I’m quoting her:

“You want a look into the writer’s psyche? Here’s your look. We’re mostly solitary people because we hunker behind a computer and pour our hearts into our work. We believe in our characters. We believe in their struggles. We believe they will end up happy, because our faith in those characters is more real than fiction. We hurt for them when they don’t understand their lovers. We laugh when we’re typing a line that came out of nowhere and surprised us with its humor. You have to understand, we aren’t crazy… we just feel and know those characters so well, they are almost real to us. Yes, we know the difference between actual real people and fictitious people. But we created these guys and we care about their stories.

So, when we hear bad things it’s like a knife.”
