Edits!

Edits!

Edits!

I have to finish these up today.  The edits for books three and four of Daughters of Persephone were due on Monday, but my editor’s computer crashed so I’m SOL.

We’re leaving Friday and I will not be able to do much of anything internet related for ten days.

Remember lovely ladies, Anytime Darlin’ will be released on August 26th.  I won’t be here until the 30th.  Take care of my baby!  I’ll miss my puppy too.  Jake had his first visit to the vet today.  It did not go well.  I could hear him screaming from the parking lot when they took him into the back to give him his shots.

My Head Shots and a Sunday Note:

August 14, 2010 - 8:47 pm 26 Comments

Remember to drop by Michelle’s Book Blog and give yourself a chance to win a signed print copy of Captured – you can read my interview too and see one of my new head shots!  http://michellesramblins.blogspot.com/

She’s posted both an interview with me and a lovely review of Captured, one of my favorite books to write.

This is head shot number one.  I climbed a tree for this shot.  I look happy and it seems as if I have cleavage.  I don’t.  It’s the push-up bra and the tree branch I’m leaning on.  Jewish people may have cleavage, but they get nervous when they look happy – it attracts the evil eye.  And no, I’m not wearing make-up.  Make-up makes me look like Bozo the Clown.  Or maybe Ronald McDonald.

Anyway – I’ll be posting head shots this week and you all can choose the one you want me to use for my blog.  You decide.  As I said, this is option number one.

I finished reading Catching Fire, How Cooking Made Us Human – it’s a great fast nonfiction read.  The author, Richard Wrangham, kept me enthralled with his very easy to understand theories on the cooking of food and how it influenced the rapid and astounding evolution of the human brain, the human body, and the division of labor between the sexes.   My next book?  Spice, the History of a Temptation, by Jack Turner.  Cannot wait!  In my TBR pile?  Mukiwa, A White Boy in Africa and When a Crocodile Eats the Sun, both by Peter Godwin.  On ebooks I’ve got romance author, Katalina Leon‘s entire libraray – yummy!  I plan to start with Noblesword.

The puppy, Jake, is out in the backyard running his little feet, oops, his big feet off, after his doggy cousin who is visiting for a few hours.  She’s an 18-month old German shepherd-coon hound mix.  I used to think she was crazy.  Compared to Jake, she’s an angel.

Many thanks to those of you who’ve signed up for my newsletter.  I still have three unconfirmed email addresses I cannot access.  Check your spam folder and see if the confirmation letter is there.

Oh, one more thing – I got word from Siren yesterday that the release of my full-length cowboy romance, Anytime Darlin’, is scheduled for August 26.  I won’t be around – I’ll be canoeing in the Boundary Waters in Northern Minnesota.  I love all my books, but Anytime Darlin’ is very, very special.  I encourage you to give it a try!

Monday Morning Cover Candy.

August 1, 2010 - 7:59 pm 4 Comments

Since my house is a mess and my puppy is a handful, you get eye candy.

This is the new cover for my cowboy erotic romance, Anytime Darlin’.  Here’s the teaser:

Devlin Barre lies near death, her family destroyed, her hopes for the future, dashed. Jake McKenna saves her life. Worried she’s becoming dependent on him, Devlin runs off without a word. Years later, Jake and Devlin meet again. Has their deep connection survived? What of the murderer who still hunts her?

This book is very close to my heart.  It’s the first romance I wrote. When it was first published, it sat buried on a virtual-world shelf somewhere in Never Never Land.  I can’t tell you how happy and grateful I am for the opportunity Siren has given me to re-write and re-release this tender love story.

The release date?  Coming soon – mid to late August.

Tomorrow – Science Fiction Erotic Romance….is it a contradiction in terms or just too weird to survive?

Welcome Siren Author Stacey Espino!

June 17, 2010 - 9:03 pm 14 Comments

I asked Stacey to drop by to celebrate her new release.  Saving Grace is her first menage and it promises to be a fantastic read!  This baby is over at Siren-Bookstrand and it’s rated SEXTREME!!!  Fanning myself here…pant…pant…

Blurb:

Grace is thrust deep into cattle country with dozens of sex starved cowboys. Her modest, timid nature soon fizzles away to make room for her raging lust. From one night stands to a ménage a cinq, her body won’t allow her to refuse the muscled ranch hands that seem desperate to pleasure her.

Grace explores her sexuality and pushes her personal boundaries. She discovers the sensual woman that remained dormant during her adult years. It is the love of a good man that forces her to let down her guards. Can she commit after everything she has been through in the past? Will she accept the love she’s craved for a lifetime?plores her sexuality and pushes her personal boundaries. She discovers the sensual woman that remained dormant during her adult years. Sex and Love, by Stacey Espino

Can women separate one from the other?

Throughout history, men have been prided on their sexual prowess. It was acceptable for them to have nameless encounters, with little regret. Men: the heartbreakers, and players. Women, on the other hand, have been respected for their chaste behavior, and any promiscuity has been frowned upon.

Today, times have certainly changed. You just have to look at the climbing popularity of women’s erotic romance, to know that we are more comfortable with our sexuality, and eager to explore it.

But, being the emotional creatures we are, can we love ‘em and leave ‘em, as men seem so easily capable of?

Do women tend to attach feelings, namely love, with sex?

Or is it very possible for them to have their fun, and walk away with no attachment?

I explored this topic in my recent release, Saving Grace.

Grace is forced into a wife swap by her abusive husband. But spending a month on the Wagner Ranch turns out to be the best thing that could ever happen to her. She comes out of her shell, and explores her sexuality. Though she has some affectionate feelings for the men that she fools around with on the ranch, she’s conscious of the fact that she doesn’t love them, and tells them so.

When Mr. Wagner’s own son catches her attention, separating lust and love is much more of a challenge.  Read Saving Grace and learn how Grace copes with her unusual situation.

All the best, Stacey!

Still waiting for blood tests.  In the meantime, my boy is doing his best to hang in here. Thank you all for your good wishes.

News…

The very busy and lovely author Stacey Espino will be a guest on my blog later this month.  Her menage, Saving Grace, will be released over at Siren-Bookstrand on June 16th.  Gorgeous cover!

There are a few new blogs I’ve been following:  Read React Reviewhttp://www.readreactreview.com/ Jessica is so damn smart, she’s scary and addictive at the same time!  She just introduced her readers to Rosario of Rosario’s Reading Journal http://rosario.blogspot.com/ Just reviews – Who woulda thunk it?  Rosario has some great stuff on her site.

Rebecca over at Dirty Sexy Books has a new WordPress site:  http://dirtysexybooks.com/ Go WordPress!  Her site is not quite as downhome as her old site, but she’s working on it.  Rebecca is one of my daily visits.  She is wonderful about reading comments and responding.  There’s a group of very funny and friendly bloggers, Chris at Stumbling Over Chaos, Susi at The Geeky Bookworm, Larissa at Larissa’s Bookish Life,  Mrs. K. Khan and K.C. of Smokin’ Hot Books, Janna at E-Romance Reader and Anna over at her site, Chronic Bookaholic-Strictly Happy Endings – who go out of their way to make you feel welcome when you drop by.

Let me see…sliced two fingers today cutting up chicken for the dog.  The vet told me to give him pizza if I have to, in order to get him to eat.  I’m not allowed to cut with sharp knives – and don’t give me that bologna (baloney) about how sharp knives are safer than not-so-sharp knives.  That’s a crock.  A number of years ago, I sliced the tip of my middle finger off while cutting ginger and lemons – with a very sharp knife.  Damn, that stung!  I dropped my fingertip in a plastic bag filled with ice and headed to the doctor’s office.  When I pulled the baggie out of my purse, he laughed and he could not reattach it.  Right now I have cotton balls taped to my fingers with Scotch Magic Tape.  Couldn’t find any bandaids.  My guy ate the chicken.  So it’s all good.  What’s a little blood between best friends?

I actually managed to work a bit on my paranormal this afternoon.  Tonight I think I’ll spend some time writing Rescued, the sequel to Captured, featuring Ekkatt’s brother Tirrit.  Be patient.  It will happen.  Lots to distract me right now.

I’m slowly reading Cutting for Stone, all 658 pages.  It’s beautiful and brilliant, but probably because I’m so distracted, my brain cells just aren’t embracing the book in the same way they did the amazing Under Heaven.  Under other circumstances…

It’s Monday!

June 6, 2010 - 9:33 pm 3 Comments

So…I have a busy day planned.

First, a mini walk for my sick dog.

Second, a hike with a bunch of hill climbing to work the gluts and the quads.

Third, a shower prior to the haircut because it’s just what you have to do, like cleaning your house before the housekeeper arrives.

Fourth, a shower after the haircut to get rid of all the sticky little hairs that will fall down my shirt.

Oh, somewhere in there I need to link you all to my Spotlight over at the Dark Diva’s place.  They are featuring me on Monday morning, along with my science fiction romance, Captured.  As soon as they send me the link I will post it.  Feel free to search their spotlight in the meantime.  They’ll be featuring some great authors this week.  http://ddrreviews.blogspot.com/

Fifth, guess what…head shots!  A friend of mine is a photographer and she will be making me look all perty.  She knows I hate having my picture taken so she’s promised I will look gooooood!  I trust her totally.  One of these days you won’t have to look at a cartoon avatar of me.  I’m really stressing out about what to wear..

For a fun read, check out Samantha Gentry’s blog – she’s one of my fellow Cobblestone authors.  Her post is titled – The Internet Will Fail and 8 other predictions that didn’t come true.

A Tiny Taste of All Four One, My First Menage…

Here’s the cover blurb, sorry – no cover yet!  Dang!

Lira Pakan, heir to the Throne of Zhinshu, has vanished.  Convinced that she’s been kidnapped, her Zealots gather along the border with the neighboring state of Khubuk, awaiting the outcome of her father’s pleas to the World Court.

Captain Tanner Kepp serves in the elite Special Forces of Khubuk.  When the captain is ordered to choose two men to accompany him to Land’s End, an isolated compound on the maritime border between Khubuk and Zhinshu, the last thing he expects to find is the missing princess.  Captain Kepp, Arms Master Cer Watso and Sergeant Redda Till realize they must rescue her and avert all out war.  The princess, however, has other plans.  These men can be more than her rescuers.  According to the law of Zhinshu, she must choose three men as consorts.  Her people say:  “One to guard the right hand, one to guard the left hand, and one to guard the back, always.

Gotcha?  I hope so.  This was a blast to write.  The intricacies of choreographing a menage kept my imagination on overheat!

Coming with Siren-Bookstrand.  I’ll post an excerpt soon!  julia

Anytime Darlin’.

May 28, 2010 - 9:33 pm 5 Comments

I wrote this sweet full-length romance suspense several years ago and it kicked around a bit.  The story revolves about a frightened runaway and the young man who saves her life.  Siren picked up the story and it will be released, after a re-write, in August.  I love the book because it’s the first romance I wrote.  I mention a real life location in the story – The Sawtooths in Idaho.

The Sawtooth Mountains near Stanley, Idaho, may be one of my very favorite places on this planet.  At one point in my life, I spent a solid two months backpacking throughout the range.  I descended into the tiny town of Stanley exactly twice, both times to do three things: take a hot shower, wash some clothes and pick up supplies.  In the two months I spent in that wilderness, aside from my traveling companion, I encountered a total of three people, the ranger we checked in with from time to time, and two riders heading up into the mountains on horseback.  Otherwise it was just the animals and us.  After a while, I never wanted to come out.  But then the snows arrived early and our cached supplies dwindled and we moved on to the the High Uintas in Utah for another month before settling into jobs in Ogden.

I’m remembering the Sawtooths, not just because of Anytime Darlin’, but because the June issue of Sunset Magazine has a feature on The Hidden Rockies, the Idaho Sawtooths.

http://www.sunset.com/travel/rockies/things-to-do-sawtooth-mountains-00418000067836/

Enjoy the article and if you ever get the opportunity, make a visit.  The Sawtooths are way prettier and much more rugged than they appear in the magazine photos.

To Copyright or Not To Copyright, that is the question.

March 20, 2010 - 11:13 pm 6 Comments

Should you or shouldn’t you?

What’s an author to do?  I’ll keep it simple – If your work is original, the copyright is assumed.  In other words, you do not have to register your work with the Library of Congress and receive an official copyright registration in order to consider your work copyrighted.  Most romance authors published by epubs do not register their work with the Library of Congress.  That includes me.  As I said, the copyright is assumed and our publishers state in the title pages of our books that this work is copyrighted.

So why copyright?  Why bother?  Well, let’s say you have a unique work of fiction or nonfiction and you choose to submit it to numerous publishing houses – epubs and otherwise – and literary agents.  And let’s say you haven’t copyrighted the work.  What are your risks?

Most publishers and agents know the law far better than you and they have no intention of stealing your work.  If you are extremely lucky, the publisher or agent will acknowledge the receipt of your work and you’ll receive that one in a hundred precious personal rejection letter.  That’s about it.  Rarely, someone might find your idea interesting and mention it to a writer they know, possibly a writer already in their house, or on their client list, or even a friend.  Important***you cannot copyright an idea.  That means, hypothetically, that if a world famous author reads your manuscript, is intrigued by the concept, and decides to write an original work putting their own spin on your idea – such is life.  You have no recourse.  On the other hand, hypothetically, if a world famous author loves your concept and releases your book as their own, maybe changing the names and locations and tweaking a scene or two, that is copyright infringement – but you still have little recourse.  Why?  Because you didn’t officially copyright the work and although you may be entitled to minimal damages, if little old nobody you can prove those damages in the first place, your legal fees will likely far exceed any monetary recompense you receive.

If you register your work with the Library of Congress for a nominal fee and someone steals your work, you are entitled to damages that will far exceed your legal fees.  The basic fee for a copyright registration is $35.00, a small price to pay for peace of mind.  http://www.copyright.gov/

Now, what sorts of works would I consider copyrighting?  My nonfiction work.  I always copyright my nonfiction work and in fact, my action recently paid off when a former publisher continued to market and receive royalties on a work that was no longer under contract with them.  Not only had the rights to the work been returned to me many months before, I held the registered copyright.  Hindsight may be 20/20, but foresight is 20/15.  Yes, I incurred some legal fees, but the publisher got a well-deserved slap on the wrist.

In the future, if I should write a longer work of mainstream fiction and decide to give the major print publishing houses and literary agents another go-round, before I send my work into the big blue void I won’t hesitate to fill out a form, pay my fee, and register a copyright.

In other news – Siren author Beth Carter tells me that her work, Black Leather Pants, is being released in print.  Congrats!

http://www.sirenpublishing.com/bethdcarter/

Small town girl Penny Varlet has moved to Los Angeles to pursue her love of art. Her boss, Kiley Laurent, is a sinfully sensual man who finds his way into her erotic dreams. One night, while working late, they act on their impulse and share a moment of raw passion.  Circumstances continue to throw them together, until one night, while working late, Penny is attacked by an intruder and hurt. Kiley whisks her away to Paris to heal, showing her a world of art and wonder. As she heals, can Penny put the anger over her attack to rest and find the courage to act on her love for Kiley?
“I was always told to write what you know. In 2004 I was living in Paris, France and had this vision of a woman coming to see the sights and explore the city like I was doing, and falling in love with a Frenchman. Much of Penny’s experiences in France are actual ones I lived through, so her journey is also my journey!” ~Beth~

Beth Carter has a contest on:  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JustEroticaRomanceKontests/?yguid=400919632

You can win a print copy of Black Leather Pants or an ecopy of Spirals.  Her new work, An Innocent Heart, comes out with Siren in late March.

Oof! You’re gonna need to get a tan on those things.

C’mon guys, this is an easy one!  What movie and who said it?  Hint…hint….

Here’s another hint for “Try not to puke.  You might have to lie in it for a while.” Think food and charity work.  Huge hint!

I’m working this weekend, yeah, for real, and I was awfully impaired today.  Super tired.  Hubby came home late last night and ooh-la-la!  After you know, it was all over, I said, that was a rousing fuck!  “That sounds like a salute,” he said and to illustrate, he jumped up yelling – “Sir.  Yessir!  A rousing fuck, Sir!” Sometimes he’s just that kind of guy!  But then I couldn’t sleep so I went to work on the WIP for a while and finally fell asleep around three a.m.  At four, hubby jerked like he was in the midst of his own private earthquake and the three cats, who sleep piled on top of me every dang night, leapt straight up in the air like cartoon cats and landed back on me, un-sheathed claws and all, then hightailed it under the bed.

At five a.m., they all wanted to go outside.  I shut them in at night to avoid getting myself into the dreaded you-never-know-when-a-newt-is-going-to-drop-on-your-face situation.  So I dragged myself out of bed to open their cat door.  After that, I gave up, made some coffee and left for work at seven-thirty.  Gar matey!

In news of the world according to me, Stacey Espino, author extraordinaire, has an upcoming release with Siren -

Nice cover, huh!

Buy link:  http://www.bookstrand.com/fearless-desires

Delius never asked for his fate, but in a world that placed all its faith in prophecy, he would be a fool to challenge it. He felt like a parasite, forced to live off the fear of humans.

From the first time Delius became trapped in Selina’s mind and seduced by her provocative thoughts, he was drawn to her. She was a mystery that turned into an obsession. Yet, for them to have a life together, Delius would have to go against his own race that demanded he fulfill his destiny. One that did not include Selina.

It’s available for pre-order.  The official release date is March 17th – St. Patty’s Day!

Okay, gotta go take care of more extremely sick people.  See ya!  julia

Interview with Logical Lust – The Cougar Book

February 6, 2010 - 11:30 pm No Comments

Today is my interview day on the Logical Lust Blog

http://bit.ly/ZWnZq

Drop by, leave me a comment and you can win a signed hard copy of The Cougar Book!

This is one sizzling read, containing stories from twenty-three amazing authors.

My contribution is – You Might Just Get It.  Here’s an excerpt:

Excerpt from You Might Just Get It, by Julia Barrett, The Cougar Book, Logical Lust

Eric lifted his eyes and studied the woman seated across the small table from him.  Her damp curls surrounded her head like a halo.  The first time he’d seen her, in the window across the courtyard, her hair had been damp, just like this.  Sweet.  Very appealing.  He wondered if she had any idea her kitchen window looked directly into his.  Probably not.  She’d only moved in ten days ago.  Eric assumed she was still busy unpacking.  That was one of the reasons he’d invited her to dinner, one reason among many.  He wondered briefly how old Kate was.  It was hard to tell.  She could be anywhere from twenty-nine to forty-five.  But he wasn’t about to ask her and he didn’t care.  Her age didn’t matter to him.  Her laugh did.  Her big brown eyes did.  Her luscious lips.  Her wide white smile.

When he’d arrived home and found her soaked to the skin and shivering on the stoop, he got to play the hero.  That was twice in two days.  There was no way he’d pass up an opportunity to spend time with her.  He’d hoped she’d accept his offer of dinner and he‘d been pleased when she did.  It was no big deal, one of his easy meals.  Oven toasted rustic bread with melted gruyere, roasted tomatoes, baby arugula and a soft fried egg.  Simple and sensuous.  The sandwich was messy and it required the use of all your fingers.  There was a lot of runny egg yolk and licking involved.  Eric hoped he could segue that licking into something else entirely.

God, there was a lot to like about her.  Not only was Kate easy on the eyes, she was intelligent, articulate, mature, and she appreciated his sense of humor.  Plus she blushed at the drop of a hat.  Eric found that adorable.  She wasn’t jaded or flighty, like so many women he’d met recently.  He’d bet the farm she hadn’t grown up in California.  Probably Iowa or Illinois.  Someplace rural.  An old-fashioned country girl.

“Where’d you come from?  I mean, where are you from originally?” he asked.

“Blair, Nebraska.  It’s a little town near the Missouri River.  I went to school there.  Dana College.  You?”

“Minneapolis.”

“You’re kidding?  You don’t have a Minnesota accent.”

“Yeah, well, I worked hard getting rid of that.  I can do it if you like.”

“You mean like…Minnesooooota, North Dakoooooota, ya think?  Like that?”

It was Eric’s turn to laugh.  “More or less.”  He looked at her plate.  “Finished?”

“Oh, yes, thank you.  The sandwich was great.  I can cook, but I guess it never occurred to me that such simple ingredients could taste so good together.”  Kate reached for his empty plate and set it on top of hers.  “Let me help clean up.  That’s the least I can do.”

He watched as Kate rose from her chair and stretched.  He enjoyed watching.  Her breasts were pert.  Not large, but pert with perky nipples.  Two handfuls.  That’s all he needed.

“You have a long day today?”

“Not too bad.  Really.  It would have been better if I hadn’t locked myself out.  But…what can you do?  I was sort of hoping to curl up in a hot bath with a good book, but I left my book in the car and then the key…well, you know the story.”  Kate carried the plates to the sink.

Eric followed with the empty glasses.  “You can still have a hot bath,” he said.

“Yeah, I guess,” she replied, rinsing off the plates.
