A bucket list of books.
I recently stumbled across a book blogger site - don’t ask me where because I’m very scatter-brained lately - and she has 1001 books listed that you…we…should read in our lifetimes. I thought her idea was brilliant. I decided to make my own list. I’m going to try, try mind you, to add ten books per day to the list. Here are my first beloved ten, in no particular order:
1. To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
2. The Caine Mutiny, by Herman Wouk
3. Dust Tracks on a Road, by Zora Neale Hurston
4. On the Road, by Jack Kerouac
5. Naked Lunch, by William S. Burroughs
6. The Lord of the Rings trilogy, by J.R.R. Tolkien
7. Ringworld, by LarryNiven
8. Dune, by Frank Herbert,
9. 1984, by George Orwell
10. Native Son, by Richard Wright
Once I started this list, I could barely stop myself from adding hundreds of books - okay…ten a day.
I almost forgot - my post-apocalyptic work of dystopian fiction, Salvation, took second place in the Paranormal category in The Dixie Kane Memorial Contest sponsored by the Southern Louisiana Chapter of Romance Writers of America.
And the Giants won - just got home and I can’t talk, too hoarse from yelling.

There are so many books I absolutely loved and took very seriously when I was young that would not have the same effect on me today because I was a very different person when I first read them.
I’ve had the experience of rereading a favorite book from the past and completely rejecting my former beloved H or H and strongly sympathizing with a villain or minor character I gave little thought to 25 years ago…
We change so much. I’m not sure it’s possible to revisit the same book ten or fifteen years down the road. Our life experiences change us and we read the book with different eyes. A bucket list of books could grow indefinitely.

Kat - Yeah, I know - but I’m trying to think of books I would take with me to the moon to bury and leave for future generations to find. So I think I’ll re-title my list, Books to the Moon!

Oh, yes. Some of these appear on my list as well. I would have put ‘Their Eyes were Watching God’ - but then I’ve never read Dust Tracks on a Road. Will have to do so!

OMG! I just hit the ‘go’ button and already I forgot one. I’d probably take off #10 and put in Order of the PHoenix, by JK Rowling, if I had to choose just 10. Sigh. There are more. I guess I have to make the bucket bigger!
