Monday was shit.
I don’t know how you do it - write when someone you love is sick.
Regina, my heart goes out to you. I don’t know how you find the strength. I can’t concentrate. My dog is sick and I don’t have a lot of hope that he’ll survive this sudden, unexplained illness. I feel like I have a hole in my chest. Canceled the head shots.
Yeah, I have stuff, writing-related stuff I should be working on, but Louie is my boy and I don’t know what I’ll do without him if the worst comes to pass. My mom has always claimed I like animals better than people. She’s right, except for a few people, I do. With animals there is no pretense. Well, my cats have been known to hide birds they’ve caught beneath their furry little bodies because they know I’ll take the birds away, but other than that, when it comes to my animal friends, what you see is what you get.
Louie has been the best dog ever in the history of my world and I’m not ready to lose him.

My dog is my hero. He is so brave and so kind at the same time. He’s chased off mountain lions and a would-be masked rapist. Yet he loves his three kitties and sleeps with them every night. He even likes our stupid pet birds. One of them can say his name and calls him all the time. He’s the only dog I know who looks up when a hawk flies overhead.
Once, when a dog we were walking with grabbed a vole and tossed it up in the air, Louie thought the animal was a ball and he ran over and picked it up. The instant he realized it was a living creature, he spit it out and stared at it, with a look of horror on his face.
He’s one of those dogs who thinks dog poo is gross and he never rolls in dead things. He can tell the difference between a person with good intentions and a person with bad intentions and if they have bad intentions, he puts himself between me and them.
He loves to wear a costume on Halloween and go to the door to give the kids candy. He loves baby animals of all species. He never starts a fight, but he will finish it if he has to.
I don’t know what’s going to happen this week, but I am so grateful for the time I’ve spent with Louie.
