Hanging out in San Fran and Sac. Went to see the enthralling Wicked last night - so entertaining and mind-blowing that ADD me sat still for an unheard of three hours. I didn’t even get up during intermission. In fact, I resented intermission, I protested intermission, especially after listening in awe to a magnificent rendition of Defying Gravity - I must now own a CD of the soundtrack. Own it and play it constantly.
I am so drawn to the bad girls, a category I used to fall under and sort of still do. And the bad boys. In Wicked, Elphaba, otherwise known as the Wicked Witch of the West, is not so much wicked as she is misunderstood - she refuses to compromise when it comes to the truth. She won’t follow the party line, thus getting herself into trouble. There’s always a price to pay when you refuse to follow the party line. However, Elphaba finds her pot of gold at the end of the rainbow…so to speak, move it over, Dorothy. Don’t you just love it when the underdog wins for once? And Ga-linda, or Glinda the Good, as she came to be known, was brilliant - a bombastic blond self-absorbed airhead, and in the end, an unlikely hero and friend of Elphaba. I think I loved them both, Elphaba and Ga-linda.
Yeah. I have a major thing for the underdog. Sports, literature, movies, theater. Give me a character who rises above circumstances any day over a character who has had an easy time of it. Like Elphaba, I was the weird girl in high school. I can identify.
Got some damn good Thai in the bargain - in the Tenderloin, boys and girls. What a great name for a very colorful part of San Fran. Korean tofu bowl in Sac today. Hey, I’m all for something that’s served sizzling, something you can break a raw egg into and stir around with your chopsticks as it cooks right before your eyes and the only concern you have is that if the server was to drop the boiling bowl into your lap it would be a life-altering event.
Certain things in life are of great import. The truth is one of those things. Cooking a raw egg in your tofu bowl at tableside is another.
