Yeah, I know, it’s not an either/or proposition. A Bronte…an Austen…what’s the difference? Who cares? Well, I do.
From the moment awkward, ugly duckling, nose buried in a book, twelve year old me picked up Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, I was sucked into an orbit around the protagonist like she was black hole of delight. Jane’s character mesmerized me, so much so that I re-read the book every single year. I adore Jane because she is harsh, judgmental and unforgiving. Even as a young child, rather than accepting her piteous station with expected gratitude, she’s stubborn and self-righteous. She possesses a strong sense of justice and fair play. Jane Eyre can carry a grudge with the best of ‘em. She never forgets a wrong done her. The character rocks! She ain’t no prissy Prudence.
Of course Jane wants to be loved, don’t we all? But she has no wish to subsume her identity and moral code beneath a lord and master - although she’s in danger of losing all perspective when it comes to St. John Rivers (I hate his guts). She’s nearly carried away by his grand passion - until she remembers what it feels like to be the object of such grand passion. River’s passion is reserved for the Lord, Rochester’s passion is reserved for Jane alone.
Can’t wait to enjoy this movie!

This movie looks great! Wonder if I can talk my hubby into going…probably not. I think this is a “girl’s night out” movie!
Ooh. It looks good. This is the type of movie I’d have to watch alone, curled up in the coach with a blanket when it comes to DVD. Have a nice weekend Julia!
My husband and I just watch a very blah version of Jane Eyre that deleted the beautiful speeches and language of the book. My husband’s immediate comment was “Its so flat.”
This version looks wonderful and seems to have the original text in place. I love the 1985 PBS Timothy Dalton version above all others. Even with a hand and an eye missing that man does it for me! lol
Jane Eyre is my all time favorite book, it’s my anchor in a storm because of its transcendent values, psychological truths and its the first and still the best book of its kind.
XXOO Kat
Penny - I’m gonna go all by myself and eat a small popcorn and get a small cherry coke! How pleasurable!
For sure, Delilah, but I don’t think I can wait!
Kat, there have been so many ‘movie’ versions, but not one has really moved me. This one looks right - Jane’s age is right as compared to Rochester. He’s not gorgeous but he’s manly, and the dialogue seems authentic. Jane Eyre is my touchstone as well. She was the first heroine I read with whom I identified 100%. Jane is not perfect. Which makes her perfect for me!
Team Bronte! I’ve always loved Jayne Eyre.
I can’t wait to see this!!
Charlie…I am such a Bronte ‘ho!
Me either, Ciara!
I want to see this one too.
