Welcome Author Sharon Buchbinder.

Please say hello to Sharon Buchbinder, romance author extraordinaire!

I asked Sharon to talk about what makes her tick, how her very interesting personal and professional life have influenced her writing. In her own words:

“For as far back as I can remember, I have always been a story-teller. As a child, I got into a LOT of trouble for “making things up.” Likewise, I cannot recall a time when paranormal events have not played a role in my life. I have always accepted this alternate reality that many others do not experience or recognize. Their disbelief doesn’t dismiss my psychic experiences: dreams that come true, that I think of someone–and that person calls, and that I knew my sister was pregnant before she did. In the 1970’s while a psychology major at the University of Connecticut, I participated in telepathy experiments using the now famous J.B. Rhine Zener cards and other images. My “hit rate” as a receiver was statistically greater than chance occurrence. Curiosity and pragmatism took me down the paths of psychology (BA), neuroscience (MA in Psychology), Nursing (AAS) and finally, public health (PhD). So, it’s really not surprising that I’ve gravitated to paranormal romance as one of my favorite sub-genres to read and to write.

As far as family influencing my writing, in 1954, when I was three years old, my mother put me on a plane in Washington, D.C., and sent me to Connecticut to live with my deaf, non-speaking grandmother, my aunt, uncle, cousin, two Chihuahuas, and a parakeet. At night, I would cry because I missed my family. As I sobbed, my grandmother would take me in her arms and hug me, making grunting noises. I’d fall asleep to her wordless lullaby of love, wondering if I’d ever see my family again, not knowing that my parents were divorcing. I never knew if I’d see my family again. A year later, the family re-united, but poverty and abuse were my twin demons. Behind closed doors, my mother, the Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout leader and pillar of the community, was “Mommy Dearest.” Much of what I write explores the themes of identity, the masks people wear, belongingness and family, including my paranormal romance, Kiss of the Silver Wolf . I have deaf characters in both Kiss of the Silver Wolf and Desire and Deception, inspired by my wonderful, strong grandmother. Reverend Edmonds, the abusive cult leader in Desire and Deception, was inspired by my mother.

In DESIRE AND DECEPTION, (Erotic Romantic Suspense Novel, New Release out April 1, 2011), pampered princess and daughter of a Mexican crime boss, Isabel (Izzy) Ramirez is a newly appointed assistant professor working toward tenure and promotion. Driven by voracious desires, including ambition for advancement in the legitimate world and lust for her boy toy, Izzy’s house of cards is threatened when the department chair confronts her about a major transgression. Izzy’s take no prisoners approach means she makes sure her boss can never expose her deceptions.

Graduate assistant and guy-on-the-side, Sean Richards wants Izzy to leave her sleazy husband. If she would only get away from that crook, he’s convinced that he can bring out the better woman who exists beneath Izzy’s tough sex siren exterior. He adores his hot blooded Latina and will do her bidding-up to a point. Despite the mind blowing sex, he can’t and won’t murder for her.

As Izzy’s nosy parker friend and colleague doggedly follows an obscure trail of clues about the department chair’s death, Izzy is forced to choose between reverting to the ways of her unredeemable father-or becoming the extraordinary woman she sees in Sean’s loving eyes.

I am working on a sequel to DESIRE AND DECEPTION, called DESIRE AND OBSESSION (Erotic Paranormal Romantic Suspense Novel) in which a recovering addict must work with a Mexican drug lord to rescue her one-year-old son from the clutches of a cult leader who believes the child is the Chosen One. One of my critique group partners calls this my “Mexican Drug Lords versus Religious Zealots” novel. :)

Thank you for allowing me to be a guest on your blog, Julia! If anyone has any questions, I’ll be happy to respond.”

    Hi Sharon,

Great interview about your life and book. Growing up Native American and traditional of the old ways of our Cultural, paranormal was just another day in the park for me. I too had a very active imagination, and always getting in trouble for telling stories.
The Creator gifted me with the same Clairvoyance. I dream and things come to pass. It could be tomm. or five years from now. I knew that my sister was going to lose her baby. She miscarriaged. My mom has the same gift and so did my grandmother. As far as I know we are the only ones with this gift in my immediate family.
My mother was not physically abusive, however my mother is very verbally and I grew up with a very low opinion of myself. Maybe thats why my stories and imagination was so important to me. For in my little world in my mind things were great and I felt love.
I’m 48 now and have overcome of alot of the low self esteem, however my mother can still be as cruel as ever. It’s funny how now I’m helping them out while there health is in poor shape. I’m so going to get this book for it sounds so intriguing.

Thank you so much for reading and commenting. Your strength comes from many sources, seen and unseen. I believe some of us have these other abilities to help us get through traumatic childhoods. And, yes, I agree about creating worlds where we can be safe is part of our defense mechanisms, too.

    Best,

    Sharon
