Charlie over at Smart Girls Love Science Fiction and Paranormal Romance has a wonderful series of posts about aliens in popular culture. Today she’s asking the question - How are female aliens portrayed in film? Is their portrayal different from the way male aliens are portrayed?
I totally think so. I think female aliens are either sex objects or evil or both. I commented that this Bud Lite commercial is a great illustration of the way we view female aliens. (It’s pretty funny too!)

I think the female aliens are portrayed as sex symbols like you mention, out to seduce men in order to do evil. The male aliens are just on the warpath, not portrayed as sexy at all. *sigh* But in everything it seems as if women are used as sex objects, what’s the point of having a woman on screen if sex doesn’t come in to play. Guess that’s the Hollywood mentality.
Delilah, yup.
Thanks for the shout out. Great (awful) commercial.
Sadly, aliens tend not to be the protagonists unless they are so human it is hard to identify them as alien at all. I was really dissapointed by the movie District 9 because they felt the need to stick an obnoxious human character between the audience and the alien. The alien, who was very alien (in appearance at least), was the best part of the movie. As Thomas, my guest blogger today, would probably say, he did a good job of showing us what it is to be human.
Charlie - I really disliked District 9. For many reasons. I guess the human/alien interaction being first and foremost.
I agree, the alien and his son were the best humans in the movie.
Female aliens in my graphic novel experience are gifted in the breast and have great hair, Male aliens (except in the book Hero) do not display their interesting parts thru their clothes the way females do.
Steph - how true!
