I’m tough to please, but in the past few years, two films have enthralled me, despite, or maybe because of their dark, difficult subject matter - Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino and Debra Granick’s Winter’s Bone.
The film, Winter’s Bone, was based upon a novel (same name) written by Daniel Woodrell. Gran Torino was made from an original screenplay. Both films are hard to watch and most of my family doesn’t understand why I like them so much, but I do.
They tell riveting stories of tragedy and triumph, courage and sacrifice. Neither film is pretty, each film is beautiful.
An actor I really like, and we won’t discuss The Passion of Christ, Jim Caviezel. I’m looking forward to this new show, Person of Interest, coming this fall. I hope it doesn’t disappoint.

Gran Torino was definitely a great movie. I haven’t seen Winter’s Bone.
I too am looking forward to Person of Interest and really hope it’s as good as it looks.
There must be a Clint Eastwood fest on AMC right now, because my hubby has been watching Gran Torino and a bunch of other Clint movies non-stop all weekend. He loves movies with Asian-Americans since he’s Filipino. I only caught a bit of it but it reminded me how amazing Clint Eastwood is….both as an actor and director.
Hope you are having a good holiday weekend!

Everyone warned me away from Grand Torino. I only saw it earlier this year. I loved it! I especially loved that powerful line at the end “I got a light…” Amazing.

PS I have to see Winter’s Bone.
I haven’t seen either. I’ll have to check them out.
