Bupkis, a colorful Yiddish expression meaning - “I got nuthin’, nuthin’ of value, significance or substance.
Here’s what I’m doing tonight, eating popcorn and drinking a beer while watching Predators (with Adrien Brody - it’s kinda hoaky but the original Predator isn’t on and it’s better than Predator 2 which sucked) and studying up on my favorite time period, the period of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the various strains of Judaism at the time, which, by the way, includes early Jewish-Christianity, so I’m reading The Jewish Gospels, The Story of the Jewish Christ, by Daniel Boyarin, Taubman Professor of Talmudic Culture and Rhetoric at U.C. Berkeley. I can read about the two surviving strains of Judaism - Rabbinic Judaism and Christianity while watching aliens cut humans into little tiny bits.
Somewhere in all this lives a fine symmetry.
And it all goes well with a bowl of Orville Redenbacher’s Kettle Corn. Meanwhile, I’m stuck with an annoying ear worm quoting from the movie, Jurassic Park… “Are these figures, uh, auto-erotic…?”
It’s called multi-tasking. “May the schwartz be with you…”

Hope you had a wonderful night.
Ah! Friday night, the traditional night for partying and getting hammered after a long, oh so long week at work.
But, as we get older, greyer (balding in my case) wrinkled and oh so tired a lot earlier than we used to get, we curl up on the sofa with our popcorn a book and a movie …….
You do know this is me I’m talking about, right? Not you, never you, young, vivacious, energetic , gorgeous and engaging
I LOVE Predator…the original. And I really want to see the one w/ Adrien Brody.
When I was teaching 8th grade science, sometimes we would “skip” lab period and watch Arnold Schwarzenegger movies instead. Predator was one of our favs. Have I mentioned how much my students loved my class? hee hee…….
I love Yiddish. but I always thought bupkis sounded like it should mean the measles or chicken pox.
I have weeks where I’ve got bupkis. I don’t know how you do it Julia! I just finished reading In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson. Even though I should be working on one of my WIPs, I couldn’t stop reading the book. I finished it in a day in a half. I’m haunted by the idea that while some people saw Hitler’s evil, whole nations naively believed he would go away if they ignored him or gave him what he wanted.
I love the way your mind works. Here, there, everywhere. That ain’t bupkis!
Interesting juxtapositioning…
I hope you have a wonderful and fun night…
Thanks, Savannah! Plan to repeat it tonight with another movie!
I think so, Anny.
Yes Jaye, my mind is stuffed pretty full. Have to make sure it stays in my skull.
Sounds like a really interesting book, Casey. I’ll have to get it. I do know what you mean…
Stephanie -
Sounds like a whole lotta nuthin’ to me!
I know, Penny, I love the original Predator! Wish I’d been in your class!
Yes, Tom, and I miss my hubby! By the time he gets home, we won’t have seen each other for 18 days. Yes, there have been times when we’ve been apart for months, but not in recent years. Jake and I are getting bored.
I had a nice night, Amber!
I love them all…and that includes AVP and AVP II etc. Also mad about Orville’s Kettle Corn. Lately I have been making fruit tarts…not really tarts, but rather individual fruit pies made in my large muffin tin. I made cherry tarts, then apple tarts. If anyone in the family smells them, they are gone. One pie crust from Pillsbury or what-have-you, one can of fruit filling of any kind…voila! Piping hot from the oven tarts. Sigh. They lasted five minutes this time,,,
Oooh, yummy tarts, Fran! Cherry tarts are my favorite!
