You. Have. Got. To. Read. This.

Before I post a link to this article I have two stories. After you read the article you can draw your own conclusions.

I’ll mention one name: Ponce de Leon.

3. Two true stories - The first: My sister took care of a friend who died of stomach cancer. It was very sad. The woman was estranged from her mother and sister, had no other family, so my sister took her into her home and she died there, in the guest bedroom. When she was diagnosed with cancer, her response was- “That’s impossible. I’m a vegan. Vegans don’t get cancer.” She died proclaiming until the end that “vegans don’t die of cancer.”

Second- My parents helped a woman, a very strange woman who had stalked my father, when she got cancer. I was opposed because I thought she was a major freak, but my parents felt sorry for her. And yes, she took advantage of them like you wouldn’t believe. On my father’s advice, this woman called me one day to ask about death and dying because I am a hospice nurse. I was very opposed to this phone call but I made an attempt to reason with her. I may have discussed this phone call in a previous post. She said- “I can’t believe I’m going to die. Why would this happen to me? This should happen to someone else.” Me, “Like who? Who should this happen to?” Her, ”Your father. He eats sugar and red meat and he doesn’t believe in god and he’s never even meditated. I’m a Buddhist adept. We don’t die.”

Me- ”Everybody dies. Nobody gets out of this world alive.”

Her- ”Well maybe everybody else dies but not me.”

Guess what? She died.

I think I’d rather do this: Three Ingredient Pulled Pork

  1. Penelope says:

I’ll take the pulled pork sammie for $100, Alex.

  2. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you eat..It is not selective..

  3. There’s that bad red meat again. Cows are the scourge of the earth and are out to take over the world by giving everyone cancer. That sounded snarky, didn’t it. Sorry and you’re right, “No one gets out of this world alive.”

  4. hubby says:

Paying attention to your body is a good thing. Paying attention to your body to the exclusion of all else is not so good. Reminds me of the studies on calorie deprivation diets to extend life. The good news there? You live somewhat longer with extreme calorie restriction. The bad news? You are miserable the whole damn time.

  5. Yeah, no. I didn’t even get through the article. Talk about self-absorption!

  6. Sandra Cox says:

I have no illusions. I’m dead meat. No pun intended, well okay, maybe there was.

  7. anny cook says:

Heh. I got sidetracked with the pulled pork and forgot to comment. Ugh, no. I’m with Marie. This guy ain’t livin’…

  8. Delilah Hunt says:

My mouth dropped when I read the part of the woman saying your father should be the better candidate for death. I will never understand the things that come out of some people’s mouths. That body minding article was strange, but there are just really weird people out there with radical thinking. I was once told by a guy that cancer and many other illnesses are all imaginary and that people just need to use their brains better to overcome those illnesses. He said most illnesses weren’t real. Go figure.

  9. Ciara Knight says:

Cancer is never selective. I can’t believe she said that about your father. Oh my goodness.

  10. If a Greco/Turkic/Italian can get skin cancer anyone can. If one cancer can strike outside the bell curve they all can. They all do. People who don’t smoke and eat right get lung cancer. people who smoke may live to be 90.

At the gym there was a t-shirt Eat Right, Exercise, Die Anyway.

  11. Margaret Y. says:

Can’t really comment on the people excessively measuring every facet of their bodies except to say….wtf?

On the other hand, I could wax poetic about pulled pork for days and days. In fact, I was just looking for an easy pulled pork recipe. Never thought of using root beer. Now, I must try it!

  12. Margaret - I think I’ll wax poetic about pulled pork right along with you. I’m going to try that recipe too!

  13. I agree 100% with the t-shirt, Steph. It is the unavoidable consequence of being born.

  14. I know, Ciara. Very odd lady.

  15. Oh Delilah, I was floored when she said it should happen to my dad! There are indeed people who believe cancer is imaginary or you can wish it away, meditate it away, pray it away. I’ve never seen it happen in all the years I’ve been a hospice nurse. What I have seen is prayer and meditation help people feel better and have a better quality of life until the end.

  16. Anny - Ha! You’re right, it ain’t livin’!

  17. Hey, Sandra, thanks for the comments! We all are dead meat, so to speak.

  18. Marie - my eyes crossed a third of the way through. Just read another article about a man who obsesses about micromanaging his poop.

  19. Yes, hubby. We agree on this. I’ll take my chocolate cake and eat it too!

  20. No snark taken, Steph. I just came back from moving beef cattle. Cancer is cancer. Vegetarians get it too.

  21. I think so too, Savannah - with the exception of chewing tobacco - that does give you cancer!

  22. Good answer, Penny! :P
