Last week hubby and I took Jake to the beach and for some hiking along the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean - my favorite beach and my favorite hiking area.
We were busy gathering carnelians on the beach when somebody pointed and someone else blew a whistle. We looked in the water and spotted a dark fin close to shore. All the surfers started in but then turned back around while all the surfers on shore ran for their boards and rushed into the water.
There be dolphins!
A pod of dolphins was surfing with the surfers. It was such an amazing sight. One of the dolphins played in the surf a mere fifteen feet from shore.
We watched for a long time, then we hiked up to the overlook and watched the dolphins and surfers from above. When the dolphins left the surfers and started swimming north, we followed them on the cliff trail above for a couple miles. When they turned back, we followed them back. When we reached the beach the dolphins were again surfing with the surfers.
Oh, so much fun!
Another dolphin encounter happened off Santa Cruz, CA - The Blue from Mark Peters:

I’m sure a remarkable sight. My daughter wants to swim with dolphins while we’re in Florida. I’m hoping we can.
Oh my, what a way to make up for an ASS kind of day. And how much fun is that for the surfers? Wow, just… wow.
That’s a wonderful story! Much better than ASS day!
Hope so, Amber! It would be fun!
I know, Jaye - I would have liked to be sitting on a surf board right then. Despite the rip currents!
Totally, Casey!
I’ve always wanted to see real dolphins up close. That must have been really cool to see.
Yippeee!
Julia, aren’t dolphins the best? Saw two while in New Zealand and they kind make everything just a bit better.
Did the dolphins have asses. Had they adopted a Chihuahua? I think they bought all the waterproofing.
Here’s something funny. I am making Chili and discover a lack of chili powder. We are having whatever you call Chili without the chili powder.
Gorgeous, Savannah. And exciting!
Yes, Penny - yippee kiyaaaaaay!
Oh they are, MT. Light up your life for sure!
No chihuahuas, Steph, but there was a lab swimming with them!
We go from an ASS day to swimming with dolphins although if you don’t mind me saying the music on the video was crap, just saying.
When we went to Florida a couple or more years ago, Ishbel and Marie went and did something else one day and Jennifer and I went to Discovery Cove where she swam with dolphins, it was a great day (until I almost got arrested I’ll tell you about that sometime).
Oh, Tom, I didn’t like the music either, just the dolphins! And you almost got arrested for skinny dipping with the dolphins, right?
