Ritual of Proof, by Dara Joy

Charlie was so right!

I ordered a copy of Ritual of Proof the same night I uploaded Charlie’s post about Creative Christmas gift giving. I found a used paperback copy for $.01. I’m not a big fan of Regency - there, said it. There’s nothing wrong with the Regency period or Regency Romances, they simply aren’t my cup of tea. But…Charlie nailed it when she said Dara Joy turns the Regency on its head. If she hadn’t said it first, those would be the very words out of my mouth. It’s like reading a Regency through a glass darkly. Ritual of Proof is the Alice in Wonderland version of a Regency Romance. I love it. Women control the world and men are mere window dressing - and they’re displayed at soirees in the hopes of making a good match. The book is a joy to read - no pun intended.

Linnea Sinclair’s book is sitting on my bedside table and I just ordered three more used books from Amazon. I’m reading a lot lately, probably because my attention is pretty fragmented. I’m trying to convince myself that it’s okay to have several works started and stalled. Besides, I’m beginning a new project involving Captured that promises to be involving and I hope, worthwhile. Fingers crossed!

In the meantime - Sharon Hamilton, please email me so I can get you your Sensual Amber body lotion. In the event that the winner cannot contact me by Monday morning, the prize will go to our runner up, already chosen by a panel of ADD experts.

It’s perfectly normal to have lots of starts and stalleds. I do this all the time. Hmmm, wait. I’m not normal so…
    Enjoy reading!

  2. If it weren’t for lots of stops and stalls-even across years and genres-I would never have written or finished anything at all. I just published my first novel, a Regency Romance which I initially wrote and completed 35 years ago. Since then-as the mood struck-I’ve edited and re-edited it a couple of times and went went through one final edit before finally hitting the publish button. I’m now working on the last chapter of a horror novel that I started 30 years ago, that again I’ve worked on editing and re-editing at least a half a dozen times over the years. Now that I have finally put my work out there, I have several other projects in various stages of completion sitting on a shelf waiting to go through the same process.
    Smiles,
    Teresa

  3. Thanks, Amber - you may have stalls and starts, but you are so amazingly prolific! I’ve told you before…I’m in awe!

Teresa - Great story! Thanks for the encouragement. I wish you the best and I’m so glad you stopped by. I think I’d be more focused if I was sleeping better, my puppy felt better and my personal life was a little calmer! By the way, love your site. Ritual of Proof has actually sparked an interest in Regencies for me!

I’m not a big fan of regency either. I prefer my historicals to be in the American West or Victorian era. The Dara Joy book sounds like an interesting take on that stuffy period. I love Amazon too, they have such a huge selection of used books and the hard to find ones too.

  5. I’ve always been so good, written each book from beginning to end before starting the next, but now I too have started stalling. At the moment I have three books half written. A years’s work and nothing finished! Of course, we all have the right to suit ourselves as to how we work, but getting to the end of something *anything* would be so nice.

Must go, I need to dress for a sioree.

  6. Delilah - I’ve gone almost exclusively to buying used books and Kindle books for hubby and his beloved Kindle. It just makes more sense to me. I do like historical novels - love Sharon Kay Penman and Guy Gavriel Kay - but Regencies have never done much for me. I think that’s why I find this book so much fun!

Oh Graham - I do hope you make a good match and bring much honor to your family! :) Yeah, I have three works one-third to one-half completed and I’m just looking at them. Very frustrating, especially because I think all three are worthwhile. I agree - to reach a conclusion would be so fulfilling.

  7. Charlie says:

Hey! Glad you liked the book. Did you notice Green had an e-reader? Before e-readers were cool. Excited to hear there might be a project related to Captured coming along. Happy writing!

  8. Charlie - the book is humorous and weirdly prophetic!
