Crashing…

March 1, 2010 - 11:26 am 1 Comment

Three solid days

of death and dying and grieving, stressed family members all up in my face and giant guard dogs trying to rip my throat out…I am so crashing. Hospice work sometimes makes you want to…oh, I don’t know…Damn, it can take a lot out of you!

Can barely think straight let alone spell…talk to you tomorrow. julia

If I don’t eat some potato chips, I may die!

Today has been the day from hell

and when I experience the day from hell, especially when I haven’t time to eat a single thing, I must have potato chips. Fortunately hell days don’t come around all that often, but lately, work IRL has been the essence of HELL. I’ve managed to avoid the potato chip trip until today.

I bought two bags because, you know, you gotta have two flavors - Balsamic Sweet Onion and Jalapeno - a handful from each bag and I feel so much better. It’s like - eat two handfuls of potato chips and call me in the morning - ‘cuz tomorrow and Sunday are shaping up to be an instant replay.

Here’s the caveat:

Dirty Sexy Books reviewed Captured! Yee-hah! Thank you thank you thank you!

Here it is - made me weep!

“It’s not often that I agree to review romantic erotica, not because I don’t like it, but because I view it like dessert. It’s a rare treat, and I don’t like to overindulge. What persuaded me to try Captured is that it’s also a science fiction story, and it’s getting harder and harder for me to pass those up.
Captured was presented to me as an erotic romance, but I will respectfully disagree. I am more inclined to call it a science fiction romance novella because the romance was the focus of the story all the way. Don’t get me wrong, the sex scenes were good, but they were on par with a SFR novel. For an erotica they’d probably be considered mild.
The way the relationship between Mari and Ekkatt developed was surprisingly robust. So were the sci-fi world-building elements. Personally, I think this story would make a great addition to a SFR anthology.”

To Hell in a Handbasket!

February 24, 2010 - 2:52 pm 7 Comments

Today was Awful…after the bird situation.

Hubby had to work at home today, so after our early morning hike, I took the dog and headed over to a coffee house to drink a double-tall-nonfact-peppermint mocha, no whip, extra foam. The dog ordered a mini-vanilla scone.

Anyway, I’m sitting there near a guy who looked neat enough. He wore faded blue jeans, a nice dark green sweater and running shoes. He was well-built, attractive, around my husband’s age and he asked me about my little laptop. Then ensued a long discussion about how I can repair my old laptop with the fried hard-drive, a computer which I much preferred. I figured he was somebody who’d made a killing in the tech industry back in the day and now he had retired early and he could sit, drinking coffee and reading library books to his heart’s content. But no…

He was in the tech industry and he was hired by a New York company two and a half years ago. He and his wife moved out East, bought a home, and all was hunky dory. Six months later, he was laid off. They managed to sell their house, but he couldn’t find another job. They moved back here, to California, moved in with his mother-in-law, and then his wife got sick with a chronic illness that is going to kill her pretty soon and they don’t have health insurance. He voted for Obama and now he’s scared to death that between looming deficits, the unemployment figures, the decrease in consumer confidence and the outsourcing of manufacturing, this country is headed to hell in a handbasket.

Yeah, no fuckin’ shit. After reading Sunday’s New York Times, I’m just as scared. I tossed and turned all night, wondering what the hell we are going to do - as a nation - and I don’t think Democrats and Republicans screaming at each other and pointing fingers is any solution. I made the mistake of listening to Tim Pawlenty on Meet the Press, a show I never watch, and all I could think was - because basically he said nothing of substance - if this guy becomes president, he’s going to make me go to church - I’m Jewish - and ask me whether I believe in God or not - and that’s none of his damn business! And didn’t that bridge fall down because his tax cuts gutted Minnesota’s infrastructure??? What is going to happen to my children and their children? Guess we’ll be moving to Costa Rica, Canada or Scotland because the tolerance factor in America is dropping precipitously.

I listen to the political pundits and instead of offering solutions to the myriad problems facing us, they dish out hatred and blame and name-calling. Gee, how constructive. While the politicos are busy insulting each other, this guy’s wife is dying because they don’t have any health insurance, two of my three kids can’t find jobs, my divorced sister and my divorced cousin - both dedicated teachers, are out of work and will probably have to move in with me, half the people living on my court are unemployed or under-employed, houses are in foreclosure - including my cousin’s. Really, America, this sucks. This fuckin’ sucks. Maybe we should just outsource our government.

Did you buy a romance novel for Christmas?

December 25, 2009 - 3:14 pm 4 Comments

Romance Novel Sales are Booming

in this tough economy. While other genres are down somewhere between 14% and 17%, Romance has seen an increase in sales - some studies sight an increase of 2.5% over last year, while other information indicates an increase in sales upwards of 34%!

What do we want for Christmas around here? I guess we want a happy ending, by gum, by golly! This economy - while perhaps stabilizing and even improving in some sectors, it sure sucks around here…where I live. My very intelligent, very capable son has been out of work for a year and a half, and despite his endless applications, he’s had nary a nibble.

FYI, the nurses I work with have been forced to accept 1-2 days a week of unpaid furlough, thus my on-call hours have been cut because my co-workers who need the income to support their families vie for the extra shifts I would normally get. It’s the trickle-down effect.

What do I want to read in these economic times? Oh, honey, save the depressing angst for pundits! Every day I spot my neighbor’s pickup in his driveway, I know he still doesn’t have construction work. Every morning I see the guy across the street head out for a run instead of a job, it means he’s still looking for an accounting position. Every time I glance at the empty shell of a house that was home to our best friends until a year ago, tears fill my eyes. Enough already! Bathe me in love, romance, passion, mind-altering sex!

Romance is affordable and you know you can count on an HEA. Sentimental sap that I am, I’ll take an HEA any day.

Speaking of romance writers, author Ericka Scott is over at Literary Escapism, talking about her new release, Crisscross - head over there and you might pick up a new recipe, not to mention a new book!

Plus a big thank you to all who wished me a Merry Christmas and those who signed up for my newsletter! Your books will eventually be in the email!
