Flexibility, that’s the ticket.

Penny Watson is very flexible. No, get your mind out of the gutter, you librarian porn hound you. That’s not what I mean.

What I mean is, she’s willing to hike, walk, sail over water, take a bus, watch me eat raw oysters - although she didn’t try one, but she’s good with fish sauce.

Even if something isn’t quite what we’d hoped, she likes it. She sees the good in it.

We’ve spent a lot of time discussing the life of a writer and the various frustrations we deal with. There are so many ways to break down in the face of obstacles, large and small. The trick is to bend, not break. Make like the reed.

Or as Stoltzfus says to John Book in Witness, “Rest, Mr. Book, that’s the ticket.”

My prescription - Flexibility, Mr. Book that’s the ticket. Be an option quarterback. It’s too easy to allow yourself to become paralyzed by doubt, fear and indecision. And then you get sacked.

Notice the approaching super-bowl appropriate sport’s analogy? :)

Wednesday - off to the Marin Headlands and Rodeo Beach for semi-precious carnelian and jade.

Penny and Julia’s morning walk in Napa.

Head over here for some photos. Penny was really impressed that we have hot air balloons. I do love to watch them but I’m so accustomed to seeing them most of the year that I only pay special attention when they float right over my house! I really need to appreciate the beauty that is Napa. When someone visits, it’s nice to see your home through new eyes.

Our weather is wonderful right now, good for us, bad for the grapes. We do need some rain, but it can hold off for the duration of Penny’s visit. We did a wonderful olive oil tasting today at Round Pond - which was so much fun.

Okay, so, I am pretty dang tired and we’ll be awake early tomorrow so night all.

For Tom - Rrrrrrrripped!

No way is this real. I swear…no….way on earth is this real. Tom, is this what I meant? Seriously?

Where’s the deflate tab?

Author Penny Watson and I managed to get one hike in today, another is scheduled for tomorrow and then it’s off to a couple wineries and an olive oil tasting.

We’ve been emailing each other between bedrooms! Ha!

All right, nighty-night. I am beat!

Oh, finished up with In the Flesh. Will get to edits later in the week. Love, Julia

Musicians As Gods.

I seriously wanted throw myself at this guy’s feet, Dennis Caplinger, who played the mandolin, fiddle, banjo and dobro like a celestial being. (With Tim Flannery and the Lunatic Fringe) It’s the same way I was tempted to hurl myself at David Crosby when I heard him sing - I didn’t care that he was an older, fatter David Crosby. As God is my witness, he still has the voice of an angel.

We went to a concert/fundraiser tonight and all I can say is, what an amazing group of musicians, including Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, who by the way, looks and sounds damn good. There is nothing like good old Kentucky bluegrass music. Nothing.

Here’s some bluegrass for you by Dennis Caplinger:

Here’s the updated version of this post - today. Kat - the lead singer sang Angel From Montgomery…angelically! She was so good. I once had a friend named Betty who sang with a band. Her rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s Angel From Montgomery made me cry every time.

Author Penny Watson is coming today for a visit! I can’t wait. :P
