From Stephanie (on a previous post): “2. There is so much information available it has given most people the attention span of, of,…something with a short attention span. Therefore, something long and monotonous, like that book or a five full-page article in the NYTimes just takes too long to read and there is so much other info to digest. I like economy of words. Although I don’t much employ it myself. Have you ever seen a People Magazine article longer than three short pages, i.e., six or seven columns?”
From Jeff Goldblum, a reporter for People Magazine, in The Big Chill: (Paraphrasing because I can’t find the real quote.) “I don’t write anything longer than what the average person can read during the average dump.” Stephanie, you are really something!
I’ve always found Jeff Goldblum sexy in the same way Anthony Bourdain is sexy - that bad boy, funny, irreverent, smart-alec kind of sexy. Besides, Jeff Goldblum gets the best lines in every movie he’s been in. Here are a few quotes. See if you can name the movie:
“Eventually, you do plan to have dinosaurs on your dinosaur tour, right?”
“Forget the fat lady! You’re obsessed with the fat lady! Drive us out of here!”
“Oooh, ahhh, that’s how all of this starts, but then later there’s the running and the screaming.”
“I believe in the old saying that everybody does everything in order to get laid.”
“Must. Go. Faster.”
“Thank you. Thank you very much.”
“Yeah, well, you think everything sounds boring. I mean, you know, you wouldn’t say that if it was the lost hope diet.”
“Don’t knock rationalization. Where would we be without it? I don’t know anyone who’d get through the day without two or three juicy rationalizations. They’re more important than sex. Have you ever gone a week without a rationalization?”
“Yeah, John, but when the Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don’t eat the tourists.”
“Amazing tradition. They throw a great party for you on the one day they know you can’t come.”

Too easy. I don’t want to spoil it for everyone else.
Google is a little scary. I put the “average dump” quote in to see if I could find the exact transcript and what popped out on the top of the search in 5 milliseconds? This blog entry!
A few more of my personal favorites:
“The computer… got confused - there weren’t supposed to be two separate genetic patterns - and it decided to… uhh… splice us together. It mated us, me and the fly. We hadn’t even been properly introduced.”
Said to Goldblum character: “Don’t worry, we aren’t making the same mistakes again.”
Goldblum character: “No, you’re making all new ones.”
“I can sum up a whole person’s life in 32 paragraphs, I once did a whole rock band in a page and a half and they had two drummers.”
Sometimes I think maybe we have some kind of psychic connection. I just posted something about movie quotes then cruised over here to find movie quotes. Crazy!
I like Jeff, but I haven’t seen all of his movies. I spotted two from Jurassic Park and one from Jurassic Park 2. There are at least two from Independence Day, maybe a third. Not sure about the others.
Fun!
I think the quote from The Big Chill is….”the average crap”-but I could be wrong.
I love JG!!!!!! And he’s originally from Pittsburgh…yay!
Yoshi - you found one of my favorites! “I once did a whole rock band in a page and a half and they had two drummers.” Thanks!
I know, Charlie….it’s weird! I do it with Penelope, Steph, Kat and Amber too! Now I have to go check your movie quotes! JG doesn’t have a huge body of work, but what he has is memorable!
Penelope - I think you’re right - I cannot find that quote!
I love Jeff Goldblum, he’s sexy, smart and goofy. As comedians and actors I thought he and Gena Davis were going to go far and I was sad to see their potential get side tracked.
I’d love to see both of them more often.
I agree with Katalina. I love both Jeff and Gena and really thought they would have more power in Hollywood. Jeff is sexy. Glad I’m not the only one who thinks so. I love his dark features and that rich voice. Good pick Julia.
Yes, I thought they were a great power couple - but it was not to be - love them both!

For the record I didn’t say ‘average dump’ a guy from People did. I wouldn’t write anything longer than my attent……..
I hope to write dialogue like that.
He is fantastic!
Yeah, sad. Gena and him. That’s Hollywood for ya.
Oh no Steph - you would never be so crude! It was Jeff Goldblum who said something to that effect but your comment reminded me of his! LOL! Now you’ve given me more fodder! Just adding fuel to the flame!
Ciara - Of all the characters I know…he does get the best lines, I swear. And he delivers them with such deadpan aplomb!
The ones I recognized were from Jurassic Park and Independence Day
IT seems to me the original quote goes something like, “She has the attention span of a gnat…” At least that’s what my brain is telling me, so that’s likely wrong.
Anny - yes, that’s Steph’s quote, but I’m trying to find Jeff Goldblum’s quote from The Big Chill!
I sneaked several movies in there - Independence Day and Jurassic Park among them, Sandra!
You didn’t even have one from one of his sleeper films that my family loves-Vibes. Not easy to finds anymore, still funny! It has Cindy Lauper (did I spell her anme right?) in it too. He is one of those great, unexpected sometimes ‘character’ actors!
Thanks for the great post (as always)!
Jurassic Park.
I like his scatterbrained-ness. I have this love hate thing with Jeff. He annoys the snot out of me, but he makes me laugh and therefore I forgive him. First movie I ever saw with him in it was The Fly.
Ooooh, Vicky - I have to watch vibes. I’ve never seen it. Jeff Goldblum can deliver an off the wall line like nobody’s business!
Hello Mia! Welcome back! You must view JG like I view Ben Stiller - annoys the hell out of me but I love his movies. I saw The Fly, both JG’s version and the original. Both scared me to death!
