Aren’t You Curious?

And no, I don’t mean about my post yesterday. Although I must admit I’m still laughing at…him…

What I mean is this: curiosity is a writer’s friend. I can’t imagine how anyone can pull together a compelling story if her or she isn’t a keen observer of human and, well, for you paranormal writers, animal behavior.

Seriously - aren’t you curious when you read something new, dream something new, witness an intriguing person to person interaction? I’m super curious. I’ve always been interested in why we do the things we do, behave the way we behave, think what we think. I love to consider, in depth, the reason behind the action.

Animal behavior fascinates me every bit as much as human behavior. If you’re paying attention, you’ll find that animals often make the best teachers. It never ceases to amaze me how many people entirely miss the messages animals send out with body language. I think the best paranormal writers make it a point to understand methods of animal communication.

When a new person stops by your site and comments, do you feel compelled to check them out? I do. A big part of this is because they were kind enough to stop by, but a bigger part is that I want to read about her (usually it’s a her), find out what they write, why they write, where they write, who they are. I’ve met the most wonderful people that way. It won’t surprise me to learn that most of you do the exact same thing.

Okie dokie - have a fun weekend!

I do like to check out visitors to my blog and also visitors to other blogs I enjoy. For me it is a lot about wanting to connect with people who like the same things I like. I have a great group of writing friends and finding them changed my life, but most of the people I see day to day wouldn’t be caught dead reading a romance novel and have no idea there is such a thing as sci-fi and paranormal romance. It is a great pleasure to be able to discuss my favorite genre with online friends.

  2. I had one of those grand mothers who dabbled in folk lore, of course to her it was just good country common sense. I learned a lot from her. Animals have emotions, if you don’t believe me ask my cats, they know when things aren’t right.
And as a writer I think my worst trait is that I would rather sit and watch people rather than interact with them, I’m a work in progress, I admit it.

  3. Mercy - My mother always claims I talk more to animals than to people. If my dog likes someone, they’re okay. If he doesn’t like them, I stay away.

  4. I know, Charlie - it was curiosity that led me to your site! I don’t discuss romance with anyone around here either.

I always check out new people who visit my blog. My mother used to call me nosey. I say I’m curious.
As for animals. I spend more time with my three dogs so I talk to them more than some of the people living in my house. :)

Yep, I check out new folks who visit my blog. That’s one of the reasons I recommend that people leave a web link (if it’s not included) when they comment. Good promo! I wish I was as curious as my 8 yr old daughter….I love how her brain works.

  7. Amber - I was going to call myself nosy, but then I thought of all the ramifications! Yeah, I’m nosy! And I do talk to my pets!

Penny - I imagine you were very much like your 8 year old! Do your dogs walk with you?

  8. I know the name of every dog at the dog park! I respect dogs as ambassador-go- betweens. Often its the dog who introduces me to the owner! lol
I love meeting new people. When I find out what others do or how much they are carrying on their shoulders, I leave the meeting feeling better about the world. Most people are trying so hard to do right thing. I like hearing their stories.

Absolutely! :) I always make it a point to visit a person’s blog when they’ve left a comment on mine. I’m with you, I’ve met such AMAZING people that way.

  10. Kat, I know it’s ridiculous, but I remember every dog name and it takes me ages to remember dog owner names! I have no idea why that is.

Ciara - yes, I think it’s so important to pay a visit when you see someone new on your site. I know it makes me feel good when I visit a site and they head over here later.

  11. I’m the same way. I know the dog’s name, how they got the name, life story and even their medications… I’ve noticed its okay to discuss a dog’s intimate life but its a bit rude to ask questions of the dog-owner.
I was alone one day in the dog park and a single man walked up to me and wanted to discuss my dog’s sexually submissive nature! It was a bit much. I felt exposed. lol

  12. Oh, Kat…too funny!

  13. I do, I click to see if they have a site that I can see or not. Maybe drop a hello or comment. That is how I discovered so many places authors.

I’d love to know what’s going on inside my cats’ heads. The dog is a no brainer. Just think like a two year old.

  15. Oh gosh, Sandra - with my puppy it’s more like a ten year old mischievous boy! My cats? I love to wonder what’s in their heads. Most of the time I can figure it out.

Yep. I check out people who comment on my blog or my Facebook or send me e-mail through my webpage. I like knowing who they are and where they’re coming from.
