Jack Lalanne lived to be ninety-six. Not just any ninety-six, he remained healthy and vigorous until the end of his life.
My husband (this one’s for you, Kat) was a big Jack Lalanne fan. They had a connection through the writings and philosophy of Paul C. Bragg (1895-1976), known as the father of the American wellness movement. Dr. Bragg believed the following, garbage in - garbage out. He believed in juicing, organic food, water fasts, deep breathing and regular exercise. As a sickly teenager, Jack Lalanne met Dr. Bragg and their encounter changed his life forever. Mr. Lalanne began to eat well and exercise regularly, and ultimately launched his career as American’s fitness guru.
While not everything Dr. Bragg claimed is pragmatic or even 100% accurate, my husband believed in some of his philosophy - organic foods, regular exercise, deep breathing and a 24-hour weekly fast. Back in the pre-child era, we used to discuss this. It’s not a bad thing, a weekly 24-hour fast. You feel really good during and after.
I could never manage the 7-day seasonal fast, but now that the kids are older, I’m kind of feeling the 24-hour weekly fast urge coming on.
Oh, by the way, remember the cat/puppy chasing hairball hacking incident of the other night? I hurt my back! Ow!
Ouch to the back!
Organic food, yes
Deep breathing, yes
Exercising, yes
Fasting……uh, no thanks. My idea of fasting is no bedtime snack:)Good luck with that though:)
Ah this blog is like Kat-nip, you knew it would lure me over!
There’s an entire shelf in my fridge filled with Bragg products. I grew up with Health kooks on all sides and I’ve learned to separate out some of the extreme, pleasureless things. For instance when I’m out or traveling, I enjoy what’s offered and I don’t complain. I never do deprivation fasts-too miserable.
A dream vacation for me would be to bicycle or hike between farms or vineyards and spend the entire evening sharing food and ideas with friends and loved ones. To me that’s nourishment body and soul. There’s something fun about not knowing what you’ll be offered as long as its prepared and offered with love (And I would hope it wouldn’t be a half cup of Gorp! lol).
XXOO Kat
Oh I hope you feel better with your back.
Hey Sandra, thanks, yes, ouch! I actually enjoy the occasional fast. Brings out all those endorphins!
Kat - knew I’d get you! I can’t believe you know Paul Bragg too! I thought hubby was the only one! Dream vacation? We hike. Loved our hiking trip through Costa Rica and the Scottish Highlands and Islands. Sometimes we go with Country Walkers so we don’t have to plan, sometimes I have the time to make the arrangements myself - like Scotland, which was easy.
The next wilderness trip I want to do is a kayaking trip through the Gulf of California in the Baja.
Thanks, Savannah, a little better right now. I’m moving carefully.
I agree with all of the above as long as it is healthy for the person. I hope your back feels better soon.
Thanks, Ciara. Getting better by increments. Hubby needs to not use wrestling moves on me. He was all-state…
