Despite its flaws, The Adjustment Bureau Worked

for me while Inception did not.

Inception, despite the hype and the dream within a dream within a dream/I am the dreamer dreaming the dream hyperbole, bored me within twenty minutes. The Adjustment Bureau is a similar sort of who’s on first-type movie, but it held my interest. Why? Investment. I quickly became invested in the characters and the outcome of their story. There was romance, chemistry, and a larger-than-life connection between the two protagonists.

The movie follows the classic romance formula: Boy meets girl. Boy and girl are inexplicably and overwhelmingly drawn to each other. Boy and girl cannot stop thinking about each other. Despite the obstacles thrown in their way, boy and girl cannot stay apart. Boy and girl are willing to risk everything for love.

Was the movie perfect? Nah. There were some flaky aspects to the story - but then who isn’t guilty of the occasional Deus Ex Machina? Overall, yeah, the movie worked, because Matt Damon and Emily Blunt made it work. I believed in them.

You know, hubby is the one who really wanted to see this movie on the big screen because our relationship, from the moment we met, has been very similar - we experienced the same sort of instant, inexplicable attraction, the same sense that no matter what, we belonged together - that there is no one else out there for either of us, at least not in the same way…not to mention the challenges we faced before reuniting. Plus the last day? The last 24 hours before he came back to me? Deus Ex Machina. I’ll get around to it eventually.

No spoilers. I think you should see The Adjustment Bureau and judge for yourselves.

Thanks for making me feel better. Remember me on St. Patty’s Day. I’ll wear green for surgery. That’s good luck, right?

Will definitely keep you in my thoughts on St. Patricks Day and yes wear your green for the luck of the Irish. :)
I’m up in the air if I want to see the movie, but I may from your recommendation.

  2. I would be delighted to go to a movie any movie and just veg… Sadly I usually end at a bargain matinee of a kid’s movie. I would love to see a slightly flawed adult love story, the Adjustment Bureau sounded great to me!
I know you’ll do well with the surgery, may the healing be perfect, swift and easy.

  3. Amber, I actually think you can wait for it to come out on Netflix. It’s good, but a big screen really isn’t necessary - it’s the relationship that counts, not any special effects.

Kat - I remember those days! The interesting thing about The Adjustment Bureau is that the love story isn’t flawed, it’s the movie that’s slightly flawed. The love story is classic!

  4. The trailer looks interesting. It is on my list of movies to see if I ever get the time to do so…

  5. Savannah - I actually wasn’t that impressed with the trailer - kept saying, What’s with the hats? I came to accept the power of the hats…

I liked INCEPTION. Now, I’m going to have to check out The ADJUSTMENT BUREAU. Thanks for the recommendation. :)

  7. Ciara - I’m gonna feel bad if you dislike The Adjustment Bureau, because I did not really care for Inception. TAJ is not perfect - the love story is outstanding, but occasionally a secondary character will say something a bit weird…
