The Amazing Thing About Montana Is

the sky. Sigh…

I’ve traveled to many places in my life, but I’ve never seen the kind of big sky one sees in Montana. Can’t explain it. The sky is just, well, big. My husband claims it’s a matter of perspective. All I know is the minute you cross the state line into Montana, the sky gets a whole lot bigger. It’s like some kind of miracle.

This is where we stayed, The Crazy Mountains, although this picture is the front side. We stayed on the back side - see the next photo - and yeah, it was pretty cold!

I won’t bore you with the details of preg checks for cows and the shocking facts about sperm checks for bulls - let’s just say the experience ain’t pretty, but it is necessary. 95% of the cows were pregnant. That’s good. Preg checks are stressful for cows and ranchers alike.

Jake chased a herd numbering about thirty of these and a herd of five or six of these:

How beautiful. Now that looks like a place that would bring calm and serenity.

  3. Penelope says:

Love the photos! I think I would have a hard time leaving. You could get addicted to all that peace and quiet and beauty.

  4. Penny - so many things to love about that place. It’s gorgeous and we got fresh cream and milk from the milk cow. I want my own milk cow.

  5. Amber, yes and no. The weather can be far from calm and serene, but the location is beyond compare!

So jealous. One of my books was set in Montana and I looked at a lot of pic to get the scenery right and I just really wanted to go and see it for myself. Isn’t it called Big Sky Country or something like that. Those pictures are beautiful, cowgirl Julia :-)

  7. Delilah - you would love Montana. Yes, it’s called Big Sky Country for a very good reason.

  8. sandra cox says:

What great pictures. I bet the sky was especially beautiful at night.

  9. Yes, when it’s clear, Sandra. Incredible night sky.

Incredible photos. I hope I get to visit Montana some day. I’ve seen enough episodes of Dirty Jobs to imagine what barnyard fertility checks are like!

  11. Goodness that is gorgeous. When I was there it was effing cold and there was NO SHOPPING. NO MUSEUMS, and it snowed like 4 feet in ten minutes. BUT it IS very pretty. Have you gathered that I am not nature girl? ??

  12. Awwww, Steph, you’re not a nature girl? You don’t want to gallop a horse across a mountain meadow? I know you do! Last March I got snowed in for two days - missed two flights.

  13. Nina Piercer says:

Traveling through the west is on my bucket list. Did you go to the ranch for a reason or just the vacationing experience? Gorgeous pictures!

  14. Yes, Nina, we had a reason, a secret reason…. :)

  15. Stephanie says:

Ah, that sounds so lovely, in much the same way down hill skiing looks like fun and elegant movement. I did have a lovely ride about 11 years ago at Camelback but after a year of lessons the only gallop I ever achieved was when my horse hit a wasps nest. Nope, for me camping is a Holiday Inn.
I have been spoiled by staying in some of the world’s “finest” establishments. The two best being the Mandarin Oriental in Munchen and Camelback (a Marriott), the Hotel Windsor Court, The Park Laurin in Bolzano where there is an undiscovered Sargeant in the Piano room, The Loews Regency where we once were upgraded to the Presidential Suite (way to impress college roommates), and so on. Give me room service over big sky anyday. I know, I am so shallow. But as I have said before I live in a state that is 90% wilderness and that’s enough.

  16. Stephanie, you are so funny. We must have a spa day sometime. Yeah, you deserve to be pampered - you live in the outback of America.
