This is me… walking over to inspect the rattling noises coming from the pantry…
“What are you damn cats doing in there?”
Both cats lift their heads from their cushions on the couch clear across the room. (Hey, these are Cali cats. A little thing like an earthquake doesn’t interfere with their naps.)
I knew there was an earthquake. I just knew it… when I went to get something out of the garage fridge and the three dozen eggs I’d just bought and stacked in there early this morning had tipped over, as had three bottles of wine.
“Earthquake! Hey guys, we had an earthquake!” If a cat can shrug, well, they both shrugged. Big deal.
Used to be we had an earthquake door. We could tell the magnitude by the force of it’s rattle. But a few years ago, we had it replaced. This was just a baby quake, 3.5. I confirmed the quake tonight with this article - Second 3.5 Quake Hits Near Vallejo.
This is the West Napa Fault - the yellow line. We live right on top of it.
Seriously. I find this interesting. I grew up in the Midwest where we lived with seasonal tornadoes. Out here it’s earthquakes. My brother-in-law is terrified to come to Cali because of earthquakes. Not me. It’s too damn pretty out here to be scared. Some photos from my hike yesterday —
What fantastic pics. Glad you’re okay after the earthquake.
I think I would wig out! Hubby is from the Philippines…they have volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, typhoons, floods…..and I guess some nice, hot sunny days on occasion.
I thought that was going to be a euphemism, bit it was only an earthquake……….. That’ll teach me to be so corrupt in my thinking.
Glad the cats are Ok, but what about Jake? Poor Jake not one mention just the damned cats again bet he’s feeling left out….
Glad you’re Ok too of course

I’ve been traumatized often enough by tornadoes to know I’ll never be sanguine about them. But earthquakes? I’ve felt only two and I was so far from the epicenter it felt more as the earth hiccuped or something, barely felt. Living on a fault line? I don’t know if my nerves could take it. At least your cats seem smart enough to know when to panic and when to resume nap time. If I lived in Napa, I’d have to keep those cats with me at all times.
Gorgeous pics.
I was in my first noticeable earthquake this summer (along with the tornado across the border in Springfield, MA). It was bizarre experiencing something I never thought I’d feel unless I was in California or near the ring of fire. My dog and cats slept through the whole house rocking. But the fish tank water was sloshing so hard, I thought it would spill. I’m glad you’re okay, sweetie! Love the pictures - the price you pay for paradise - right?
The pics look so good…Earthquakes always freak me out..I’ve felt a few and I always wish I never have to feel one again even though I know I probably will..
Hi Savannah. They don’t freak me out as much as they should, but then neither did tornadoes.
Casey, when I was a kid, we experienced an earthquake in Iowa from that Missouri fault line. It was so weird!
Hi Jaye. I’ve been in tornadoes and I am oddly sanguine about them. Yes, I know they are horrible killers. But we had so many when I was a kid. One destroyed my cousin’s home and business.
Yeah, Tom, just a lil old earthquake. Although my husband does rock my world…. Jake probably didn’t notice a thing.
Hey Penny - I swear I’m waiting for the day Shasta becomes active, or maybe Mt. Lassen. Could happen.
Had another aftershock today, Amber. Keeps tipping wine bottles over.
Glad the earthquakes aren’t worrying you. Here in Florida it is all about the hurricanes. On the plus side, they have a season. I once looked at a map and tried to find somewhere without a natural menace. There isn’t one. Whether it is tornadoes, earthquakes, blizzards, volcanoes; everywhere has something that causes problems. the areas you hike in look just beautiful. Enjoy!
Gorgeous scenery. Glad you enjoyed the earthquake…
Thanks Anny! LOL!
Hi Charlie! Hope all is well with you! Yeah, I don’t think I’d like hurricanes. Or typhoons. Or tsumanis.
Earthquake! Yikes! Refresh me, what part of the Midwest are you from?
You’re to far north for me to feel it, but we get our share down here in San Bernardino county!
I’m down in South Orange County and we didn’t feel a thing. Dang it.
Spoken like a true Californian.
(“A little shake and they runnin” NAME THAT MOVIE hehe)
INDEPENDENCE DAY! Oh, us Cali girls!
Hey, Karen, San Bernadino gets some biggies!
Blizzards aren’t usually a menace. An ice storm where the trees are exploding all around you is a menace. Don was in Mountainview for Loma Prieto. Don isn’t afraid of much but when we have the slightest tremor here he freaks. I have been in a straightline windstorm which I think was probably an F1 tornado. I have been in a couple of big hurricanes. I’ve been in a big flood, and two major ice storms and countless blizzards (when they close the state down HERE it’s a big deal). I can do without the earthquake. I don’t feel the need to experience it.
Oh no Steph, after having been stuck in several blizzards I’d say they scare me worse than tornadoes.
