Not bad at all…
My husband and I went to Morimoto’s last night, yes, the Iron Chef’s place, for cocktails and appetizers. Recently, we’ve decided that sharing several appetizers is way more fun than ordering full entrees.
We shared a calamari salad with quinoa two ways in a red miso dressing - totally yum - and I’m not a fan of quinoa, but I love the way it’s prepared at Morimoto’s - both crispy and tender. The calamari is light and delicate.
Our daughter insisted we get the rock shrimp, Morimoto’s take on buffalo chicken wings - half the shrimp is cooked with fresh wasabi and the other half with some sort of red chili. It’s served with an ice cold blue-cheese dipping sauce. Delicious, especially the wasabi half. Nice burn.
Last we ordered my favorite - Penny knows what I’m talking about, the King crab legs, split and broiled and coated with some sort of chili paste so exquisite, with such a brilliant flash of heat, I literally want lick the platter. As it is, I lick my fingers and the crab shells. I could, like, live on this stuff… the chili paste. I’d inject it directly into my veins, but then I couldn’t taste it. Damn, that stuff is killer good.
Last, but not least, the wait staff brought us a toffee squash cake with some kind of vanilla bean ice cream and tiny pears and a little birthday candle. Scrumptious. Since I’m a picky squash eater, (can’t be too squashy) it must be prepared just right. Morimoto’s prepares it just right for my particular (or is it peculiar?) palate.
We got home early enough that my husband wanted to watch a Netflix movie we’d had sitting here for a while, Real Steel, with Hugh Jackman. I was like… “Okay. But it’s two hours. (whine… whine) I can’t sit for two hours…” And he’s like… “Yeah, but you can do your usual puttering around while I watch… And Wolverine is in it.” And I’m like… “Okay, fine, I’ll putter around while you watch…”
The truth? I ended up sitting for two hours watching a very entertaining movie. It was like watching Rocky on steroids or larger than life Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots. The fight scenes gave me the same heart pounding high of a real boxing match. We were both yelling… “Get up! Get up! Right cross! Uppercut! Knockout!” The special effects were stellar and it was really fun to watch a robot do the Rope-a-dope! Yes, I was a little kid, but I do remember the Rope-a-dope. It was a fun birthday and Saturday made it even better. Happy sigh…
DH and I usually get appetizers to share unless I’m starving and need a full meal.
The food you had sounds scrumptious. Glad you had a fun birthday and day after.
Sounds like a perfect night, Ishbel and I do like fine dining, when we can afford it, she follows and is followed back, by one of Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants, where she has eaten ( I haven’t, what happened there?) and there is another in Canary Wharf where we like to go.
We had a nice leisurely lunch out yesterday and we will be up in London on Tuesday and plan to have a nice meal out then too…
1. I remember those crab legs! I’m so glad you had an awesome birthday dinner.
2. I don’t care if Hugh Jackman is dressed up like a clown. If he’s in a movie, you gotta watch it! HUGH!
3. DUDE! YOUR BOOK IS #3 ON THE KINDLE FREEBIE BESTSELLER LIST. OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *doing cabbage patch dance* *downing a martini in one gulp* *jumping up and down* YEEEEEE HAWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!
4. Have a nice day. ;^)
Yahoo! Number 3. Awesome! I’m definitely checking out Real Steel - hello, Hugh Jackman! Glad to know the movie was worth watching.
I am drooling on my keyboard. Wow, sounds like a fabulous meal.
I am so glad you had such a great birthday. I am so glad you shared Hugh Jackman with us. I gotta get that movie.
#1 on the contemp fiction list last night.
Jaye - you and Penny are killin’ me! I. Can’t. Look. It was a great meal. Evil witch lost a double-header yesterday and the Giants won last night and today… my favorite pitcher, Ryan Vogelsong. Drool away!
Yes, Casey, rent Real Steel. I was surprised. Love Hugh Jackman but had no idea this movie was so entertaining!
I know, Penny… aren’t they yummy??? Thank you for your amazing support. This is terrifying. Because one teeters on the brink of failure at all times.
I am so picky about restaurants, Tom, because I can make the food myself. So, if I’m going to pay money, it better be damn good, otherwise I’ll go to a local barbecue joint or Mexican place. That’s the one thing you lack in Great Britain, good Mexican food.
I love sharing appetizers, Amber, especially around here where prices are so high. And thanks!
Oh all of those look so yummy..It has been a while since I’ve had calamari.
Glad you enjoyed the entrees and the movie. The dessert sounds yummy.
I’m a big fan of calamari, Savannah - but it’s got to be light and perfect.
So glad you had a good birthday dinner. Those crabs sound awesome. I love crab and chili paste so badda bing!.
