I don’t know about you, but I was quite disturbed when I read that Hostess was closing its doors. The world has been a sadder place since the demise of Hostess.
It’s not like I ate Twinkies or Ho-Hos or even those iconic Hostess Cupcakes, but still Hostess has been around for generations. It was an American institution. I appreciated the fact of it. Just like I don’t eat Frito’s but I appreciate the fact of Frito-Lay.
And I figured after the coming apocalypse we could survive on Twinkies.
Then Hostess closed its doors because of an employee strike, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. Health-conscious citizens were avoiding Hostess snacks in favor of other snacks, worse snacks, snacks utterly devoid of any nutritional value whatsoever.
I’d rather eat a Hostess Cupcake than a rice cake. A Hostess Cupcake is way more attractive, what with its adorable sugary curlicues. It’s moist and tender, it’s tasty, and it’s made with enriched flour.
My youngest daughter and I actually baked our own version of Hostess cupcakes — buttermilk chocolate cupcakes, chocolate ganache frosting and royal icing for the curlicues. We filled them with sweetened whipped cream.
Let me see… All things being equal in terms of empty calories, which would I choose, a Hostess Cupcake or piece of cardboard purportedly made from rice?
Is there a doubt?
Besides, what offense did Hostess commit? It’s not as if any of us is forced to buy and eat junk.
However, here is a piece of good news:
Hostess Cupcakes, Twinkies, Find Their Savior.
Hey, I’m excited. I want to see those golden Twinkies in their little crinkly packages on my grocery shelves again.
All will be right with the world.

I grew up eating the twinkies and cupcakes. I can’t eat them now…but I miss them being on the shelves.
I miss them too, Amber. There’s something about looking at them that makes me happy even tho I don’t eat them.
It’s a damn shame.
I want one of your cupcakes…..
I don’t eat Twinkies, but I’ve been known to eat a Snoball once in a while. I’m glad they’re back.
I have great childhood memories of Hostess Cupcakes! Especially in the summer when I got to lick the melted frosting off the plastic! I think the frosting was a bit different back then and much more meltey! I don’t get to eat em much anymore but I did appreciate their availability so I will be glad to see them back! (Not that I’m gonna eat em anymore………much!) This was a very tasty treat (blog) Julia.
I have great memories of looking at them, Ray. I have eaten a few Hostess Cupcakes, which have the most appeal for me. Hostess has been around all my life. I don’t like to think of it vanishing into thin air.
Stephanie - funny. I tasted a Snowball once. It’s sort of on my list of things never to taste again. But they do remind me of igloos so I like them. Smiley food!
One of these days I’ll make more cupcakes!
