I tried, Tom and Roberta. I swear. Fail!
Lately I’ve been eating my asparagus sans ketchup. And I’ve been reasonably happy. I’ve used lemon black pepper butter and anchovy butter and even eaten the asparagus plain. It’s been all good. Until today.
Yesterday I stopped at Wholefoods to buy one thing I can’t get anywhere else in town, a specific brand of probiotics. While I walked through the store I happened to notice their expensive organic asparagus. It was on sale- the price was still high, but c’mon, it was on sale.
Couldn’t resist.
I cooked it today. A quick blanch, an ice bath and voila- a little more pine green in color than I’m accustomed to, but, you know, asparagus plain and simple.
Uck. Double uck. Had this vile, nasty bitter aftertaste. What a time to be out of ketchup! I mixed together dijon and hot sauce. Didn’t help. My favorite vegetable was inedible. And it’s not like I bought slimy asparagus. This stuff seemed fresh.
Asparagus is the harbinger of spring. It’s the best. So fresh and green grassy in a good way, not in a cow eating hay kinda way, but even hay smells a whole lot sweeter than this tasted. No more Wholefoods for me. I usually stick to our local markets for my produce. Guess there’s a reason.

Well that just bites!
Never buy organic. That stuff will kill you. LOL
And I forgot to add. Ketchup on asparagus? Euuwww!
It does, Amber!
Yeah, this sorta tasted like poison, Stephanie! From now on, only pesticide asparagus for me! And ketchup is great on asparagus.
On sale at Whole Foods? Isn’t that an oxymoron?
Yoshi - YUP! Nailed it! Live and learn.
Okay, I don’t quite get the ketchup on asparagus part, but you’re not the first person to complain about Whole Foods’ TOO-organic veggie taste. We had the same complaint with fresh leeks and jicama.
But still..ketchup on asparagus? ;=)
It’s surprisingly good, Marylin - two of my three kids eat it with ketchup too. Yeah, no more WF fresh veggies. I’m disappointed almost every time I buy something there - meats, deli stuff, baked goods, produce. Just not worth the money.
Ketchup on asparagus? And you don’t keep it secret? A round of applause for bravery - the foodies will lynch you. I eat pumpkin seed butter on oat biscuits, nothing odd about about my choices, either, is there? LOL
I have nothing to hide, Shelley!
My kids and I also put barbecue sauce on our baked potatoes. And we grill bread and slather barbecue sauce on it. I think pumpkin seed butter on oat biscuits is perfectly normal. You know what? Sometimes my daughter spreads peanut butter on her ginger cookies. It’s good! Thanks for stopping by!
I got some last year that I washed. It was gritty and then I wshed it again. The asparagus seemed to have incorporated the greit into its very being. S
This was gritty too, Steph. And I always rinse asparagus. Nothing worse than biting into grit.
Well my little ketchup loving sweet pea …
It would seem that the respondents to this post are overwhelmingly in agreement that ketchup with asparagus is a bit of a non sequitur and is truly being used by you to great comic effect xxxxx
As much as it pains me to say it though, and you know it does, if you like it my darluing Jules, just ignore the rest of us, ad carry on regardless, just as you planned to do anyway.
As for the horrible taste, sheesh if you can’t trust a Whole Foods outlet well that’s just wrong on so many levels I just don’t know where to start…… bless xxxxx
I’m telling you, Tom, it’s all sitting in my fridge and I won’t touch it. Tastes like cow piss. It’s very wrong and I am going back to ketchup! Unless I grill the asparagus and then it’s best with just lemon and butter.
You know, back in Iowa we used to call Budweiser beer cow piss. And, sorry all you Southerners - Mountain Dew. Tastes like cow piss.
