There will be changes- in my life and in this blog. But before we get to that, enjoy these pictures taken while riding my horse in the Crazies, Sweetgrass County, Montana.
This is such a beautiful place. If ever you have the hankerin’, head to Sweetgrass Ranch north of Big Timber, Montana. It’s wild - wolves, bear, mountain goats, coyotes, cougars, marmots, elk, deer, antelope, golden eagles, bald eagles… We saw them all. This is not trail riding. This is real riding on real horses that spend 8 months of the year turned out in the mountains. You get to move cattle, restore trails- for those of you ‘crazy’ enough you can use a chainsaw or at least pack one in on your horse- search for runaway horses, mend fences and gates, eat amazing homemade food because there are no fastfood joints anywhere in the vicinity.
The best thing about Sweetgrass besides the horses and the company? No TV, no internet, no cell phones. Plus I got to spend time helping my daughter and son in law - moved their cattle - most of the land we ride on belongs to them as they border Sweetgrass on three sides. My son in law is improving - it’s barely been five weeks since his accident. He might be back on a horse in 3-4 more months. He hopes…
And yeah, we had a helpful ghost in the bunkhouse. No kidding. Nice ghost.

Those pictures are amazing. Love the mountains and Montana is beautiful. I’m glad you’re back and had a good time. Want to make a bet that SIL get on a horse before 3 months?
Stephanie - I think I love Montana more than any place on earth. My SIL is determined to get better but not being able to ride is the most difficult part of this injury for him.
Great photos. Closest I came to that kind of experience was at a ranch in Ashcroft, B.C. Stayed in this old house with the ranch hands. We went riding in the mountains, but I’m no rider and my horse was boss. When he sniffed the barn from a mile away, he took off and I held on in terror. It’s the last time I was on a horse (decades ago). Afterwards, over some wine, the ranch hands told ghost stories. I guess they come with the territory.
How fun, Diana! Except for the horse running away with you part!
Yeah, horses will try to be the boss of you and ranch hands are full in interesting stories!
No TV! No internet!! No cell phones!!!! Why don’t you just kick me in the ass AND beat me over the head with a frying pan!!!! >^<
Welcome home, Julia! I missed you so much. But must say, after seeing those pics, I’m surprised you could bear to leave. Gorgeous.
Nice ghost! I hope you aren’t being sarcastic. So glad you had a great trip and your SIL is doing better.
Good to see you back, Julia. Changes coming, huh?
Welcome back, Julia! I should have known when you said you’d “try” writing a Clerihew, you were out of the saddle and home again. Wonderful pictures. Can’t wait to hear about the bunkhouse ghost…and the changes in your life and the blog.
p.s. keep trying with the Clerihew. ;=)
Thanks, Marilyn! Yes, I’ll try. Can’t guarantee I’ll succeed! Ah, well, change is coming but I’ll try to tell the tale of the bunkhouse ghost before I do anything else!
Thanks, Tim. Yes, changes. I think…
Yes, seriously nice helpful ghost, Penny. Tell you all about it! Son in law is getting better.
Thanks, Jaye. It is hard to leave. Pretty country.
Ray - LMAO! Yup. Low tech.
Welcome back!!! As always great pics.
Wonderful news about your SIL.
Now, what’s this about a nice ghost?
Wonderful pictures, wonderful place!
Oh darn, you’re really making me want to go there! And Zachary, the male protagonist in Book #2, is a Montana man. Which made lots of ladies swoon, apparently.
Welcome back!!!
How delightful to have you back. Lovely pics. So glad you SIL is improving. Blessings on you today.
Thanks, Anny love!
Well AD, ranchers in Montana can be swoon-worthy, that’s for sure. You should visit one day.
Thanks, Charlee. It is amazing!
Hi Amber! Thanks! Nice ghost tomorrow!
Gorgeous photos, what an adventure!
Glad to hear you are back. I was going thru wit withdrawl. Yes, I was witless.
Curious about change - glad to hear about son in law and helpful ghost.
Hope everything is groovy.
Hey, Steph. Not sure about my wit. My wit seems a little tired right now.
Hope all is well with you too!
Thanks, Kat. Guess I’m an adventure junkie.
Fantastic pictures.
I have to agree with Jaye above - missed you but seeing those pics…ahhh I might have stayed. Ghost or no Ghost.
Thanks, Roberta. It was fun.
I missed you and Heart You and glad you’re back and glad you remembered to take the camera this time but as a Health and |||Safety Consultant I am concerned thatn you were taking photos while driving a horse, sheesh woman
that is all
Tom - LOL! I used my phone to take the photos and Oscar says they suck. I did ride my favorite horse though. She puts up with a lot from me. And she runs fast!
