Penis Jokes Rule the World, or end it, not sure which.

We watched This Is the End with Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Michael Cera (OMG!), Emma Watson, Mindy Kaling, Paul Rudd (in a brief squishy part)… well, it featured pretty much every geek comedian of that generation. Not that Emma Watson is a comedian but she was very convincing as the straight girl goes all zombie slayer on your ass. Even Rhianna had a cameo. Before she went to hell. Literally.

The movie was written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and thus it was Pineapple Express redux except the actors played themselves, filled the dialogue/screen with giant penis metaphors and actual giant penises, all the while skewering the banality of their own Hollywood lives.

I loved it and I’m not big on juvenile penis jokes - it was the whole end of the world rapture apocalypse thing that hooked me, well, that and it seemed as if half the movie was ad-libbed- which was terrific.

Worth the price of admission alone? The possession of Jonah Hill or maybe a random character losing his head. Depends upon your point of view…

Well, the title sure grabs you, huh? Ah, yes, the movie. We went to it when it first came out. It was entertaining to some degree. We had some good laughs, but it’s not a film that resonates, but then again, I don’t think that’s what the filmmaker had in mind. Sometimes, we just need fluff. As for penis jokes, when they’re funny, they’re funny. I can’t make up my mind whether all this openness is for the better. I guess it all boils down to a matter of taste.

  2. Diana - a little too adolescent boy for my taste, but segments were very funny! Memorable? Nah.

The head rolling around the living room floor wasn’t memorable?

  4. Hey Yoshi! It was! I specifically mentioned it in the post!

    First, Just and FYI:

I got a notice in my email about this post. But the previous two posts I got nothing. Nada. Zero. Zilch. Thought you would want to know.

Now as far as this movie, it is not my genre. Some juvenile movies are fun. Based on the trailer, don’t think I would care for this one.

    I agree with Diana:

I can’t make up my mind whether all this openness is for the better. I guess it all boils down to a matter of taste.

I am very disappointed that you deemed it unnecessary to mention Christopher Mintz-Plasse in today’s blog!!! And here I thought we were friends. >^< (grrrrrrruuuummmbbbblllllle)

  7. I so thought about it, Ray! I did! I did! Cuz of that entire group he’s my fave!

  8. Roberta, sometimes you just gotta laugh at the absurd! I don’t know what’s up with my email. Will check!

I suspect a penis joke is funny…depending on whether or not one possesses a penis. Mostly I find the entire genre a gigantic yawn. I like my humor a little more subtle… :D And I know! Based on my books one would not think I know the meaning of the word…

  10. I can always count on you, Ray! ;)

  11. Yeah, Anny- definitely more of a guy thing! But I do like a good end of the world make fun of Hollywood types scenario!

  13. Ray Plasse says:

  14. Ray, I won’t touch that with a ten foot pole! ;)
