Another food-related post because I’m too darn tired for a writing-related post.

You all know I have a parrot and a parakeet, right?

And you all know the two live together in their gigantor cage in peace and harmony, right?

We keep the birds in our bedroom because we realized that birdies need to go to bed early - can’t have too much stimulation; they get cranky. It works out very well for everyone concerned. During the day, I leave the television on for them - both birds talk and they often repeat stuff they hear…but they didn’t repeat the following, I happened to be in the rocking chair, changing my shoes when I heard this myself.

The female talking heads on that show, The Talk…(is it called The Talk?), were discussing weight, because yeah, like they really need to lose it. Julie Chen, who is quite slender, was complaining about the fact that she can’t seem to lose the last few pounds of her baby weight - which I suspect is because she was underweight when she got pregnant in the first place. Anyway, Julie Chen said ‘someone‘, i.e. Sara Gilbert, who is a vegetarian, had recommended that Julie eat almond butter with whole grain toast for breakfast. And did you know that almond butter has two hundred calories per serving!?! OMG! No wonder she can’t lose those last ten pounds!

Sorry, Julie, Sara Gilbert nailed it. Whole foods, unless you eat an ungodly amount of something, will not make you gain weight. Processed foods and sugar will. Almond butter on whole grain bread makes for a great breakfast - fats, protein, complex carbs, vitamins, minerals, micro-nutrients, anti-oxidants and fiber. Nuts are among the healthiest foods around. Go for it, Julie Chen, eat that almond butter on whole grain toast! No fear, no guilt!

Homemade cashew butter is actually my favorite. Yum!

    Almond butter, yummmmm

  3. I love raw nut butters and get my sister to blend up different combinations for me in her Vitamixer (its a wonder machine-I need my own!) Beyond just peanuts and almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, sunflower seeds and hazelnuts are delicious thrown into the mix. The secret is make a small batch, refrigerate it and use it fast.

  4. Yum, Kat! Totally. I use my food processor to grind the nuts up in small batches and you’re right, you have to eat it fast. I love nut butters! Super healthy stuff!

Amber, so you saw it too? Kinda bugged me. It was like…quit yer bitchin’! Eat yer nut butter!

    Definitely, Sandra!
