That got your attention.
But what am I thinking about? A Bloody Mary. (And for those of you who viewed the 50 Shades of Grey parody… it’s one ‘r’. I looked it up.)
And why am I naked?
The naked part is easy. One reason is that it’s hot and my house is like a sauna. My husband would be very put out if I got into the other reason.
Anyway, in my lifetime I have drunk two memorable Bloody Marys. The second was last night - a pickled pepper Bloody Mary. Oh. My. God. I can still taste it. I want another one right now. The Bloody Mary-Moto made with Grey Goose Orange Vodka, Heirloom tomato juice, Pickled Hot Peppers and Dill.
The other resides in Baltimore, Maryland. It is a meal unto itself and made for sharing - this - Miss Shirley’s Crab Bloody Mary with pickled peppers, okra and yes, crab.
I’ve never made a Bloody Mary.
Here is your assignment, should you choose to accept it. Where is your favorite Bloody Mary? If you’re willing to share a recipe I’d love to try it.
Please! I feel like it’s about time I learned how to make a cocktail. I mean, if Penny Romance can do it…
Next we’ll work on dirty gin martinis with four olives!

Wish I could help. I do not like Bloody Mary’s…I don’t like tomatoes.
That sounds incredible! My mom loves Bloody Marys and we always had a classic with a stalk of celery in it. I’m going to Blue Ginger tomorrow….I’ll check and see if Ming has his own twist on that one. Should be good!
I’ve never had a Bloody Mary, but that picture up there is making me realize how much I miss eating okras. It’ll be a hunt over here to find those.
Sorry, darlin’, no cocktails for me. I drink my bourbon neat, water on the side.
But will watch to see what you come up with great interest.
Your Bloody Mary sound so much more delicious than the traditional one. I’ll have to try it.
Nearly just stopped at the headline opening but then thought ‘hey there might be a photo too…’ sorry
And then found it was a post on booze and I thought, ‘still too drunk to get dressed from the night before, sheesh and this is my friend….
BM looks nice, but never been to my taste, when I do drink, and it’s not that often, like Jaye I prefer my booze unadulterated, Ishbel on the other hand, if it’s got alcohol in it just keep feeding it to her, love it when she’s saucy or is that saussed?
I’ve never had a Bloody Mary. This may have something to do with the fact that I don’t really like tomato juice. Or raw tomatoes. Vodka, on the other hand, is excellent. Especially in shots, cold, straight from the freezer.
No tomato juice anymore. Alcohol practically never and then only a thimbleful of wine.
But that does look good!
On a personal front…still in the aircast anytime I go out of the apartment. At least for another week or so… But maybe, maybe, I’ll be able to go swimming NEXT week!!! Yay!
Now you are making me want one…It has been a long time since I’ve had one..
Where do you get heirloom tomato juice?
I think Morimotos made it themselves. Probably squeezed the tomatoes and strained them. I think what I really liked was that the drink wasn’t all salty and they dipped the rim in spicy stuff.
Hey Savannah, the pickled pepper Mary-Moto was great! Now I need to learn how to make it. I rarely drink.
You don’t live so far from Miss Shirley’s, Anny! We shared ours three ways. Hope you get that cast off ASAP!
Hi Aaron! I’m not a tomato juice fan, don’t drink it. But on rare occasions (two) I’ve had a Bloody Mary that made it worth it. I’ve never before had super good Vodka I liked. Cheap Vodka tastes like poison to me. This Grey Goose was good.
I am saucy, Tom! And I rarely drink anything alcoholic but there’s just something about pickled hot peppers I can’t resist! Sorry - no photos!
I like my Scotch plain and pure. My Vodka must be mixed with something or I think it’s yucky. Can’t wait to meet Ishbel!
Oh Janna, it was good and I’m not usually a Bloody Mary drinker. Not too much salt.
Jaye - I just put my bourbon in my whiskey cake. It’s the best! I really need to try it straight up. You and Gibbs…
Oh, Delilah - I love okra! Plant it every year. Put okra in something and I’m on it.
Oh yes, Penny, find out. And ask him if he knows how Morimoto makes his! Ask! Ask! Ask!
Too bad, Amber. I’m a big tomato fan!
Not trying to pat my own back, but my favorite Bloody Marys are my own.
I don’t make Bloody Marys for myself; I make them in batches only, and upon request by my spouse and/or his best buddies. I’m sure to get a request the night before two major golf outings.
The buddy or buddies blow into town on a Thursday afternoon before the outing starts on Friday; they’ll sweep my spouse out the door for dinner and drinks. Late in the evening they’ll come back to the house, giddy from a mixture of rich food, alcohol, and pent-up testosterone. I try not to laugh in their faces as they try their best to ply their tipsy wiles with me, scolding them mockingly for disturbing the evening quiet with their boyish silliness.
And I’ll cave in as I always have, for the last 20-plus years. I’ll agree to get up at the frigging crack of dawn and prepare my best bitch’s brew for them.
At dark-o-thirty, I pull the following out of the cupboard, along with a 2-quart pitcher, a small cooler for ice, and plastic cups for the golf cart:
- 2 quarts quality tomato juice (Store label is fine, but it must be thicker and richer than-ugh!-V8. Never V8. Ever.)
- Worcestershire sauce
- garlic powder
- dill weed (do not use dill seeds)
- leaf oregano (not ground)
- Tabasco sauce
- vodka (not the good stuff, but stay away from the bottom shelf stuff), at least 3 cups. 3 cups to 2 quarts of tomato juice is the equivalent of a double-shot of vodka per cup of juice.
Once I’ve prepared my mise en place, laying out all the ingredients, measuring spoons, and pitcher, I make a big pot of extra strong coffee. I pour myself a big mug and I wait.
Sometime between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. the boys will tumble down the stairs, eyes bleary from insufficient sleep, laugh lines deeper than the day before. They’ll ease their backsides into the bar stools at my kitchen island, groan a greeting as they peer through shuttered eyelids, then flail for the coffee mug set within their reach.
After the first mug o’ java has been consumed, I am coached by the boys in croaking tones on how to prepare their next libation, to be smuggled onto the golf course within the hour. I never pay attention to their instructions, though. I prepare it the same way I do every year, starting with two cups of vodka in the mix, pouring out a few short glasses for them to sample; they generously offer feedback on which ingredient needs an additional boost.
“Hey, I don’t mean to criticize or anything, but this needs a little something…”
“Like? More Tabasco?”
“Nah. It’s a little thick. Maybe some more vodka?”
(Uh-huh. It’s always the vodka.)
The pitcher holds somewhat less than two quarts as they scurry out the door to make their tee time, and I am holding a freshly decanted Bloody Mary to be enjoyed in the sudden quiet left in their wake.
Ahhh…
Got it! Definitely the dill weed. I got the dill weed! And no V-8. I agree with that for sure! I’m gonna try this, Femme, thanks! Now I just have to figure out how not to drink an entire pitcher by myself!
Yeah, dill weed is good stuff here. Sometimes I add celery seed, too, but as the boys have matured and now sport a bizarre collection of dental gear like partials, they may pass on seeds that get under/in their teeth.
Most of this is to taste, though I’m pretty sure at this volume I use 2 TBSP Worcestershire, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp each dill/oregano, and a minimum of 1 healthy splash of Tabasco per cup (2 qts juice=8 splashes).
Have your girlfriends over for brunch. They can help toss down a pitcher, can’t they? You could always make this without the vodka, too. It’s not as fun but it’s far less tempting to drink a pitcher by one’s self.
The best Bloody Mary I’ve ever had was years ago and my friend had canned her own tomato juice to use. Now it would be called Heirloom I suppose. It’s all in the age.
I don’t drink Bloody Marys. I’m more a Chocolate Monkey and Toblerone kinda gal.
Ciara, I have never had either. I like dirty gin martinis, Scotch, tried a little bourbon, and a Bloody Mary if made well and not too salty. Not a fan of Margaritas but I did have a tequila shot contest with a good friend once. I beat her…
Yup, Stephanie, I think that’s it! Homemade tomato juice.
Femme - LOL! I’m picturing those celery seeds! I actually have a love/hate relationship with them (the flavor) kinda like salt and vinegar potato chips. Hate them but can’t stop eating them.
