Remember these???

The Secret World of Og, by Pierre Berton - I loved this book, as did my kids - along with the animated version - http://youtu.be/lIE27NMfkfs.

The Water Babies! You have got to watch this! Delightful! http://youtu.be/6WdlQhFNa4c

The past week has been insane. My parents traveled to Canada for a wedding and instead of the trip taking seven hours, it took forty-eight. Thank you United Airlines. The last time my parents flew United, a six hour trip took two and a half days. There’s nothing like having your elderly parents stranded in airports and rotten hotels.

I don’t even want to talk about the rest. I think I’ll just order Waterbabies and watch it.

Three other favorite children’s stories (aside from Charlotte’s Web, by E. B. White) -

The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett

The Borrowers, by Mary Norton

The Mushroom Planet Series, by Eleanor Cameron.

Oh to be a kid again!

Your poor parents. Hope they’re home and resting.

  2. anny cook says:

I don’t fly. I like the control of driving and choosing when I want to stop… :-)

  3. Katalina Leon says:

Thank you for reminding me of the Secret World Of Og! When I read that title I could smell minty library paste in my mind and almost feel the battered copy of Secret World of Og at our school’s library. The Troll was scary. : )

PS. Your poor parents. That’s too much stress for elderly people to handle for something that should have been a casual trip. Airline travel has been ruined.

  5. Oh Kat - I loved The Secret World of Og as a kid and made sure to read it to my kids. They loved the animated version too. Thanks, I haven’t talked to my parents since they got home. I assume they’re catching up on sleep.

  6. Hi Anny. I do fly. Used to hate it, now I don’t hate it much. Depends upon which airline I fly. I do hate United.

  7. Thanks, Amber. Yes, they are home.

  8. I’m so sorry for your folks..Truly horrible.

  9. Penelope says:

Hope your parents have recovered from their horrible trip…..ugh! My favorite children’s books include A Wrinkle In Time, Island of the Blue Dolphins, all the Little House books, and the book “Mandy” by the actress Julie Andrews.

  10. Thanks, Savannah - I think they’re sleeping today!

  11. Penny - I’ve never heard of ‘Mandy’. Gotta go look it up. I love the books you mention. :)

  12. Tom Stronach says:

Is there in murder mayhem in those books? Oh well

Glad the folks at least survived the ordeal and at least they are back safe and sound loved the previous post on him, my kind of guy. Hope your Aunt is getting better too

    xxxx

  13. Ah… Tom, Water Babies is Scottish. A fun animated movie for kids. My dad is your kind of guy - a letter writer par excellence who always has a legitimate beef with his local government. My aunt, no hope. She’s the last of us back in Iowa, aside from some cousins who haven’t acknowledged us in a couple generations.

  14. Casey Wyatt says:

Yes, these are all great books Julia! I don’t know the mushroom series, I will have to check that out. I’m sorry to hear about your parents’ awful travel nightmare.

  15. Thanks, Casey. They are great reads!

  16. Cripes did they fly through Newark?
