Baby it’s cold outside.

Every morning we wake up to find the fountain frozen solid. Jake and I have been hiking in icy weather for the past five days. We love it. He’s a cold weather boy. But my poor daughter is up in Montana where it’s been 25 below 0. 20′ in Northern California seems balmy in comparison. Although my lemon tree, my dinosaur-type ferns and my philodendrons beg to differ.

Did you see the recent snow bowl in Philadelphia? I haven’t watched a football game like that since I was a kid! 1968- 54″ of snow dumped on our town from one snowstorm.

Welcome to the next little ice age, folks!

  1. Tim Dittmer says:

Cold here too, Julia, but no snow to speak of (thank you mama nature).

That was a fun game to watch, even if we did lose. Wah!

  2. anny cook says:

We watched the Ravens game in Baltimore…it was pretty wild, too!

  3. Oh I know, Anny. I watched some of that game!

  4. Sorry you lost, Tim. But it was so old-school. Like watching a bunch of little kids have a blast in the snow. At least it’s hard to get hurt!

  5. Ray Plasse says:

I’m originally from Mass. and I don’t miss any of that weather that you speak of. I get cold when it’s in the 50′s now. I no longer get nostalgic (oh maybe just a little) when I see a football game in the snow. Just grateful for my current city of residence. :D

  6. Our poor Maggie is getting cabin fever. She wants to go for a hike, but it’s so cold she can’t be outside for more than 15 min. We actually set a timer to save her paws. We only have about 5″ of snow, but it’s crackly-icy.
Jim and other 4-wheelers have been driving the mountain trails on weekends to tow or strap-pull out sedans or trucks with bald tires, driven by unaware Christmas tree cutters who think if they can drive down a snowy side trail, well surely they can drive back up and out again.
This is an early bitter freeze, but we’ve seen worse. Or at least I hope so.

  7. Hi Julia, It’s even cold here in Israel-a Siberian front passing through the Middle East!

  8. Roberta says:

Yep! Mini ice age it is. Haven’t heard much from the Global Warming types either.

  9. Amber Skyze says:

We were at the Patriots game and they kept showing the game with all the snow on the jumbotron. Crazy!

  10. The blizzard of ’68! Remember it - if not well, at least I remember! Feel bad for your daughter in MT. Hope your SIL is doing well since his accident.

  11. Steph Berget says:

We got 7″ of snow on Saturday, but the wind blew so hard that the ground is bare in some places and we have 4′ drifts in others. The games were fun to watch. Like old times.

  12. Diana Stevan says:

Yup, cold here on Vancouver Island as well. We usually only get a couple of weeks of snow at best, and that doesn’t come until late January or February. Christmas occasionally. Well, this year, we’ve now shoveled three times. Snow still on the ground, slightly below freezing. I don’t mind a little of it, as I grew up in Winnipeg, but it’s enough already. And yes, saw the footage of the football game. Insane!

  13. Oh Diana - it is soooo cold everywhere! Antarctica just set a new low temp record, at least since we’ve been keeping records!

  14. It was like old times, Stephanie! Loved it. How are your animals doing? This kind of cold and wind is tough.

  15. Thanks, Steph. He’s doing well. Almost released from his lifting limit - 50 lbs. So you remember ’68 huh? My husband didn’t believe me.

  16. You must have been cold there as well, Amber. How fun tho! Next year we’ll go to at least one Niners game in their new stadium.

  17. Oh Roberta, they’re trying to relabel this climate chaos. Nope. Mini ice age. Temps have been dropping since 1999.

  18. Hi Diana! When I lived in Israel we had snow- it was an extremely cold winter. Had to work hard to keep the citrus trees from freezing. And Jerusalem was unbelievably cold. Loads of snow!

  19. Poor Maggie! You’ve had such cold weather, Marylin! I figure we’re in for 25-40 years of cold. I’ll always remember the calamitous Fourteenth Century…

  20. Those snow bowls, Ray - gotta be the best! We’re both from the Midwest. Cold bothers me less than it does my husband, maybe because he grew up in Minneapolis.

  21. Sandra Cox says:

    Was that Willy Nelson?
I couldn’t believe they were playing that game. Did you see how red their arms were? Burrrr.

  22. I cant believe they played that game sleeveless, Sandra! Real men don’t wear sleeves!
