Heraclitus, my new favorite philosopher.

Heraclitus of Ephesus.

Good character is not formed in a week or a month. It is created little by little, day by day. Protracted and patient effort is need to develop good character.

Heraclitus of Ephesus, 535 B.C. - 475 B.C.

You could not step twice into the same river.

  1. I especially love the “…can’t step twice in the same river” quote, Julia. It’s used so often in different forms in literature. Remember the lesson from Hesse’s SIDDARTHA?

I’ll try signing up for notices AGAIN. I still haven’t gotten one; I just happened to stop by on my own, and I’m glad I did. Great quotes.

  2. Sorry, Marylin. Check your spam box. Or make sure you confirmed. Maybe the confirmation is in your spam box? If you try again and it says you’ve already signed up, it must be going to spam. I’ll look for your email next time I get an update.

  3. Steph Berget says:

Great quotes. I, too, like the one about not stepping twice in the same river.

  4. Yes, Steph, I do too. If you read his work, you realize how much he influenced the Gospel of John. (Ephesus and all that.)

  5. Roberta says:

My father used to always tell us, my brothers and me, the same thing about character. Must practice character like a muscle or else it gets flabby.

Love the old philosophers. Nothing new under the sun. Philosophy was one of my fave subjects in college. Should take another class some time. :)

  6. Me too, Roberta. I should take another class.
