April is a big month. It’s my favorite month, mostly because April, from my perspective, is spring. Birdsong, wildflowers, hunting morels, baby bunnies…

Back in Iowa April meant plowing and planting. When that rich black dirt in the Midwest, particularly in Iowa, is tilled up it smells good enough to eat. Seriously.
I miss it. I miss the fireflies, the raspberries, the elderberries, the Dutchman’s Breeches, the black walnuts, the black squirrels, the massive thunderstorms, the Carnegie Library, Christie Creme cheeseburgers and sherbet, the people, my Baubi’s Christmas tree green house with it’s red door and wrap around front porch. There’s not one thing I don’t miss about Iowa.

Now I live in California because the hubster dragged me out here. Kicking and screaming, I might add, although we did move around quite a bit after we got married- which brings me to the point of this post. Let’s get personal!
(I hated California for nine solid years. Now I like it well enough. But it sure ain’t Iowa.)

My beloved German shepherd Louie’s birthday - April 29th. He died a week before Jake was born. (Jake missed the cut-off. His birthday is May 29th.)

April is a terrific month. I like it better than December- although December contains Oscar’s birthday, my older daughter’s birthday, Christmas and Chanukah. It’s a little more hectic but still almost as fun as April.
Ah, love April as well. Happy belated birthday and a happy anniversary tomorrow. My daughter’s birthday is April 1st, mine is April 7th and we are in Toronto right now to celebrate our granddaughter’s 17th birthday this Sunday, also Easter. It is a great month. Hugs.

It’s a great month, we agree but damned expensive as we have 4 kids birthdays and a Fathers (Ishbel’s) which just happens to be on 1st April …….
And of course it’s great as we get the first burst of colour normally on the trees and gardens ….

Many “Happys” to you, Julia, for your belated birthday and anniversary.
When I was growing up, we took the train to California every third Christmas to be with my dad’s parents and sister. They had the San Diego Zoo nearby, orange trees and avocados growing in their back yard, and flowers blooming everywhere. But I didn’t want to move there. I would have missed the snow, and four distinct seasons, and the smell and sight and feel of crops growing in fields, and so many other things. Even now, although I love Colorado and am married to a 3rd generation native of Colorado, some of those specific things I can fully enjoy only when I go back to Kansas.
Home becomes wherever your heart is, though, and it sounds like you’ve created a good life in California. But now I understand better why you love helping your “kids” at the ranch and taking the blue highways across small towns. Where we grow up affects tiny details in our DNA, I think.
Oh so true, Marylin. You get it. Although I love the smell of orange blossoms. Still miss my mock orange tree/bush back in Iowa. Gotta love those blue highways.
