I figure he’s dead. All Is Lost, a Robert Redford Film.

Abandon All HopeAbandon All Hope You Who Enter Here, Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy.

The Old Man and the Sea.

The Old Man and the Sea.

All Is Lost. Yup. No way did Robert Redford survive. He endured hell and in the end he went to heaven. Because I always knew Robert Redford would not go quietly into that good night. He would not vanish without a fight. (Independence Day) Amen.

The movie is almost entirely without dialogue. The theme is this poem~

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night, Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

  1. One of my favorite George RR Martin novels is ‘The Dying of the Light,’ also (later?) entitled, ‘After the Festival.’

It is a great poem - resonates in so many ways. Death is not an easy subject.

  2. Facing one’s mortality, Alicia? Heck yeah. Tough stuff. Now I have to look for that George RR novel. I’ve read a couple of his earlier works. Still hoping he’ll manage to complete A Game of Thrones.

  3. Yes, he’s an amazing 77, Steph.

  4. anny cook says:

What? He made another movie after Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? Really? :D

  5. Love that movie, Anny, but I love every movie he’s made.

  6. anny cook says:

Actually, MY favorite movie of his was Sneakers…

  7. Sandra Cox says:

You scared me. I thought he really died.

  8. No, Sandra. Definitely not! Hubs watched the movie last night and he says the hero lives!

  9. Roberta says:

I am late to this discussion, but my favorite RR movie is Sneakers too. However, as a male he lost his charm for me about ten years ago. Not sure why.

  10. It’s odd, Roberta. While I’ve never found him charming I love his acting. He’s fit into so many roles and I’ve loved most of them.
