Sports madness! Hubby has won his Fantasy Football pool. Yay! He really is a Fantasy Football analytical genius. In honor of the coming playoffs and Bowl Games, I’ve decided to discuss a few of my favorite sport-related films.
In the category Football, the honor goes to North Dallas Forty, a film loosely based on the Dallas Cowboys of the early 1970s. Funny, irreverent and in your face. A not always pretty look at professional football. Stars Nick Nolte.
In baseball, we have four selections: The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings, starring James Earl Jones, Billy Dee Williams and Richard Pryor. A laugh out loud, sometimes tragic, poignant look at the Negro Leagues.
A League of Their Own, with Gena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell and Tom Hanks. This is a great movie.
Field of Dreams, with Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, and once again the great, the amazing, the man I want to meet…James Earl Jones. And it takes place in, you guessed it, my home state of Iowa. Is this heaven? No, it’s Iowa. Based upon the wonderful book, Shoeless Joe, by W. P. Kinsella.
Bull Durham, a pre-peat performance by Kevin Costner and the lovely Susan Sarandon. Possibly the sexiest sports movie ever.
The only soccer movie I care about, Bend It Like Beckham. Is there another? Love the relationship between Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra, and I fell in love with Jonathan Rhys Meyers. She can make full Indian dinner…
And my favorite sports movie of all time, starring the incomparable James Earl Jones (is there a pattern here?), The Great White Hope. This was Jane Alexander’s first movie. It’s the fictionalized story of championship boxer, Jack Johnson, and the prejudice he faced. James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander played the same roles in the original Broadway production.
The runners up: Raging Bull, with Robert De Niro. Remember the Titans, with Denzel Washington. Rocky, starring who else? Sylvester Stallone. Fight Club, with Edward Norton and Brad Pitt. You must have your favorites too.

My fave is A League of Their Own. LOVED IT! I like several others that you mentioned. My son is obsessed with The Blind Side. I think it’s a great family movie.
I loved A League of Their Own also. Bend it Like Beckham was great too. All in all I’m not really into sports, although I like to watch the occassional soccer game.
I’ve seen a few of those movies…Some I will need to check out. Bend It Like Bekham is pretty good..
A League of Their Own is one of my very favorite movies of all time, that and Bull Durham. I’m very into sports and I do enjoy a good sports-related film!
Congrats, hubby!
I love Field of Dreams. I didn’t care that much for it when it first came out. But it grew on me and is now one of my favorites. Hope you are doing well, Ms. Julia.
