1. When I’m not reading the book, I want to be reading it. I resent having to set it aside for any reason and I am eager to get back to the story.
2. I know without a doubt which character is which. I may not be privy to his or her inner-most thoughts, but I definitely know who is who.
3. A good book does not require me to continually refer to earlier chapters in order to orient myself to the chapter I’m currently reading.
4. A good book gives me a reason to care what happens next and to whom it happens.
Give me solid, straightforward storytelling any day.
