Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright are deliciously Machiavellian.

Talk about skewering the powers that be… With Style.

House of Cards.

Oooooh. If I was a Washington insider I’d be shaking in my boots because of

House of Cards.

Every episode is a scathing review of the way our government functions.

Genius.

The writers have obviously studied The Prince, by Niccolo Machiavelli, from cover to cover. I know I did, back in high school. The work made a big impression on me.

Politics have no relation to morals. Niccolo Machiavelli

It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both. Niccolo Machiavelli

No enterprise is more likely to succeed than one concealed from the enemy until it is ripe for execution. Niccolo Machiavelli

It is double pleasure to deceive the deceiver. Niccolo Machiavelli

Men should either be treated generously or destroyed, because they take revenge for slight injuries - for heavy ones they cannot. Niccolo Machiavelli

A prince never lacks legitimate reasons to break his promise. Niccolo Machiavelli

  1. Jaye says:

This is a show I want to love-the old man is an addict. Terrific actors, brilliant writing, conflict, conflict, conflict. Alas, I can’t stand it. I think it’s because there is no one to root for. I can’t find any heroes. The “truths” behind the machinations turn my stomach.

Funny, one of my favorite shows is Lilyhammer which stars Steven Van Zandt as “Johnny” aka Frankie the Fixer. He’s a gangster, a bad guy, yet I just adore him.

I’ll have to ponder about why one show repels me while the other delights me.

  2. I think that’s why the show is so fascinating, Jaye. There are no good guys, just bad guys and not so bad guys and smart manipulative bad guys. I like it because it’s like watching The Prince come to life.

  3. Tom Stronach says:

    Ohhhhh Jaye …..

I’m with Jules on this, I didn’t think I would like it after seeing the Great British original over 20 years ago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Cards_(UK_TV_series) but even although the Netflix one has been made longer it is good

  4. It’s just so wonderfully evil and cynical, Tom- and as we know power is corrupting, which is why you and I don’t want power because we would take over the world. With Jaye.

  5. Roberta says:

It is like watching life itself. It is like THE culture at one place I worked. I have lived it. I had to leave. I do not have the stomach for it. To see it glamorized with great actors is a joy. However, I prefer to be a nobody than to live in that world again. Too close to home.

    Loved The Prince quotes!

  6. Boy, Roberta, one would need a cast iron stomach! This is why I avoid politics like the plague. Blech! But Machiavelli was spot on.
