You Can Go Home Again. Becca’s Dance by Jordyn Meryl.

A select few romance authors write for the older, more mature, romance reader. Let’s face it, most romances involve twenty-somethings, maybe thirty-somethings. Typically the heroine is 24-30. The hero might be older, say 28-40.

And of course NA, or New Adult Romance, is very trendy. The characters tend to be quite young - 18-24.

Two of my friends have written romance for the more mature reader - Katalina Leon and Penny Watson.

Kat is the author of, yes, the one and only BDSM book I will ever recommend, Noblesword. She wrote it a number of years ago and by today’s standards I believe the story would be considered almost puritanical. Kat’s writing is so evocative, her story so complex, the sensuality so heady- Oscar and I loved it. Well, we didn’t only love it, we sort of inhaled it.

Noblesword

I read a pdf copy on my computer, he read the hard copy and we had a race. There was so much to discuss about the book (and I do mean discuss) AND the characters were of an age close to ours. When you hit your forties sexuality and sensuality do not (Poof!) disappear.

Penny Watson took romance and turned it on its curly little head in her most recent book, Apples Should Be Red (I always want to write Read).

Apples

She took two older, yet far from elderly characters, put them in the same room and let the sparks fly, or maybe I should say she let the chips fall where they may. Apples Should Be Red is a laugh out loud romantic comedy. It’s bawdy but not dirty, and it’s preciously un-PC. Thank you, Ms. Watson!

Love doesn’t take a holiday just because you’re a woman pushing sixty.

Another friend of mine, a very dear friend, has written a love story, just recently published, all about second chances. Yes, there is life and love and magic and mystery after forty.

I got to know Jordyn when I judged a contest. It was years ago. Of all the entries I read, and I read many, hers stood out. Yes, the grammar, the organization, the sentence structure was all a bit rough- this was her fist attempt, but not only was her story unique, she told it beautifully. She cast a spell over me. The characters got under my skin. I remember that story to this day, and from what I gather- hint-hint- Jordyn will be releasing it soon. (No spoilers.)

What struck me about that first story was this - Jordyn took a risk and created a mature heroine, a widow just beginning to emerge from her shell and rejoin the living. All the other manuscripts I read were formulaic and forgettable. Jordyn’s story stuck with me. So I emailed her to let her know how much I loved her work and I encouraged her to keep plugging away.

She did. Now she’s released:

Becca’s Dance, by Jordyn Meryl

Becca's DanceThe journey of life is not about the path traveled, it’s about the dance.
Remember your first love? The itching in your palms to touch that person, the churning sensation of your stomach when you kiss, or the promise of forever love? A summer romance had all the possibilities for Becca and Clay. But a tragic accident killing two of their friends, sent Becca running away to build a sheltered life, protected from pain. Clay tried to drown his pain in booze and other women, but failed. Each picked mates for reasons other than love.
Twenty years later their paths cross as Becca tries to escape from the shame of a divorce, and Clay is living life as a single father to six grown boys.
In the small community of Lester Lake, love, fate and star-crossed lovers work towards rekindling a first and only true love.

Becca’s Dance meanders back and forth through time like a winding river. It’s a story of pain, loss, longing, loneliness, healing, memory and meaning. Of course it’s also about connection and true love. Becca’s Dance really tugs at the heartstrings. I couldn’t help but fall in love with Clay, of course, but the secondary characters are amazing. That’s the thing about Jordyn, everyone in her stories is fully fleshed out.

Some readers might be confused by the jumps through time. This was not an issue for me. I can follow a terrific story anywhere.

Me Happy! Vikings and Orphan Black!

Why would I not be happy? I have Vikings and Orphan Black to keep me happy. And truth be told… Game of Thrones wasn’t half-bad last week, now that Joffrey is gone for good. If I’d been forced to sit through his ass-holiness for one more episode I might have rammed a chopstick through my ear.

But dang! I’m so sad!!! Only one more episode of Vikings remains this season, a season which has been genius, by the way. Big boy Bjorn, son of Ragnar Lothbrok, rocks the house.

Bjorn, son of Ragnar Lothbrok.

Bjorn, son of Ragnar Lothbrok.

A tender father/son moment.

A tender father/son moment.

Lagertha- girl crush extraordinaire!

And you wonder why everyone wants to be like Lagertha?

And you wonder why everyone wants to be like Lagertha?

Rollo- the best Berserker ever. Sexy sexy tormented man beast.

Rollo. Be still my heart.

Rollo. Be still my heart.

And Ragnar, oh ye blue-eyed hunka hunka burnin’ Viking of understatement and thoughtfulness and insight.

A Northman with a destiny to meet.

A Northman with a destiny to meet.

Even liking the new and improved (i.e. less elitist) Aslaug.

Aslaug, on becoming human.

Aslaug, on becoming human.

Can’t wait to watch Ivar the Boneless grow up. I hope Vikings keeps on going although that uncouth beast, King Aelle, makes me nervous. Because I’ve read my history… of course Ragnar’s sons will… (no spoilers)

Now Orphan Black, in Season Two, Episode Two- Governed by Sound Reason and True Religion, is hitting its stride. Yes, the clones are back in fine form and in this episode we have a little more time to appreciate each one of them. And (spoiler alert!) I knew it!

From the moment I saw Mrs. S I knew she knew more than she said she knew. I knew it!

Governed by Sound Reason and True Religion was truly terrific. Watch it. At last we get an inside look at the Prolethians. Scary stuff. I won’t give much away, except to say this branch of the society seems more reasonable than the more extreme branch, although equally deadly. I suspect they have their own plans for the clones. Their. Own. Plans.

Tatiana Maslany continues to amaze.

So What Am I Reading?

Oatmeal In a Jar. It’s the Latest Craze!

First off, let’s get one thing straight. Unless you are making three servings at once, it don’t look like this:

Stylish Oatmeal in a Jar.

Stylish Oatmeal in a Jar.

But… It does taste dang good and a single serving is filling and healthy.

So here’s what you do… and I’ve got it down, ladies and germs. I will give you the basics, and then I’ll tell you how I take my oatmeal.

Stick with the basics. Add your own frills.

The Basics.

The Basics.

My basics for a single serving:

1/4 cup rolled oats

1/4 cup milk or cream

1/3 cup plain Greek yogurt

1 pinch Kosher salt

1 heaping tsp. brown sugar

2 Tbs. toasted nuts (obviously leave out the nuts if you’re allergic)

fruit - 1/3 of an apple, chopped, or 1/4 cup berries, or peaches or whatever fruit you have on hand

You also need a 1 pint mason jar.

Pour the plain rolled oats (not steel cut) into the jar.

Pour on 1/4 cup milk or preferred liquid.

Add 1/3 cup plain Greek yogurt.

1/3 cup Yogurt.

1/3 cup Yogurt.

Add sugar or another sweetener, pinch of salt, and any spices.

Teaspoon brown sugar.

Add fruit of choice.

1/3 of an Apple, Chopped.

Toast nuts and add.

Toasting Sliced Almonds.

Screw on the lid. Shake well. Refrigerate overnight. Enjoy the next morning.

This is what it looks like after shaking.

This is what it looks like after shaking. Looks the same the next day.

The texture is nice and nutty. There’s no raw flavor. This stuff is tasty and filling. I’m not a hot cereal eater anyway so cold oatmeal is right up my alley.

If you’re interested in calorie counts I figure the above recipe contains about 380 calories. Remember, a calorie is not a calorie because it takes more energy to digest whole grains, nuts, fruit and fats. I do suggest a pinch of salt, otherwise you risk a sort of bland outcome. Feel free to leave out the sugar. I like brown sugar so…

I do believe in toasting nuts and seeds. Toasting makes the nutrients bio-available and decreases the toxins. And I think nuts taste better toasted. I’ve also tried mango, pineapple and banana. I like all of them. The bananas do tend to turn brown though.

So have fun with this! Just remember it is not as pretty as the first picture and it only fills the jar maybe 1/3 to 1/2 full. Still good. Still filling.

A Quick Note.

I’m finished with edits. Done with my blurb. Working on my cover. Taking my own photographs this time and working with my own personal cover artist. He created the cover for One Foot In Heaven, Journey of a Hospice Nurse. Love that cover, by the way.

One of my short stories - non-romance - has been accepted into an anthology. The anthology should be released this summer. Mum’s the word for the time being. This is as much information as I can divulge. I’m happy about it though.

The knee sorta sucks. Slow healing. Some backsliding involved. Forced to take it easy- again. Sigh… and double sigh.

Inactivity and I are a contradiction in terms.

Now, must put my birdies to bed and maybe I’ll do a little reading. Got some good books uploaded to my Kindle. Nonfic here I come!

Oh, here’s a freebie- The Soul Series Special Edition - all three books, Incorporeal, In the Flesh and Stay plus bonus material. Yum!
