I break for authors!

May 25, 2010 - 10:38 pm 9 Comments

I need to take a moment to focus on my fellow authors – enough with the me…my…mine crap.

So, the good.  Author Brynn Paulin has a sweet, hot little number on the Amazon Kindle bestseller list – way to go, Brynn!  As of 5/25, she’s rated at number 69 – a good erotic romance position!  Here’s wishing Brynn much well-deserved success.  Hey Brynn – Beauty and the Feast just got listed in Amazon’s Kindle store!  Yay!  Now back to you…

http://www.amazon.com/Punished-Taboo-Wishes-ebook/dp/B003BEEAFS/ref=pd_ts_kinc_69?ie=UTF8&s=digital-text

Another good.  My secret on-line lover, Mia Watts, has written a dynamic post about do’s and don’t's for aspiring authors.  I think a whole lot of us who try to make writing our livelihood consider her words to be pretty much spot on.  The post is entitled, Tips and Tricks, and she posted it on 5/25.  Thanks, Mia.

http://www.writersevolution.blogspot.com/

These two tips are my faves:

4. “Don’t Diva. No, seriously, don’t. You aren’t all that. None of us is. Just because someone asked you to submit, or had you sign a contract, there is ALWAYS someone who knows more than you. Acting like there isn’t just makes you a huge ass. If you didn’t realize it before, figure it out quickly… WE ALL TALK. No shit. The editors from multiple houses chat with each other and know the authors who pull power-plays. The authors writing for multiple houses and discover your assiness won’t play nice if you’re going to shit on them. The publishers chat amongst themselves, too.
It is rare indeed where I lay out my cards and piss off a publisher. I’ve done it. Just makes sure it’s deserved.
Readers know when you’re self-absorbed. Keep it in mind. I don’t want to hear any of you say, “Do you KNOW who I AM?” or I’ll smack you. It’s for your own good, so say thank you and move on.

5. Never stop learning. You are not the all-knowing grand poobah of authorhood. Learn from your peers even if you think you’re better than them. New authors tend to have a temporary superiority complex. That’s okay so long as you get over it and realize that every person in the industry and out of it has something valid to offer. Learn from it and use it in your writing. It makes you a better person and a better author.”

The good.  Author Katalina Leon and I agree that romance and erotic romance writers are not stupid.  We may come from a variety of backgrounds and educational experiences but generally speaking, we are a well-read bunch of folk.  Check out the comments from yesterday’s post on philosophy.

The bad.  I got dog poo on my hand yesterday when I was walking my dog.  He stepped in another dog’s poo and I had to clean it off with piles of grass and leaves because my dog was so totally grossed out he refused to take one more step with that poo on his foot.  So as a result, we were both grossed out.

The badder bad.  My author friend, Regina Carlysle, is going through a very challenging time and needs good thoughts, prayers if you got ‘em and just general positive vibes sent her way.  Regina is another one of those big-hearted, generous, supportive authors who has held my hand many times over the past three years.  All the power that is given to me is sent to you, Regina.  Hang in there.  You are loved.

Tomorrow:  Mythology.

Dear Author’s Poll – Do you skim/skip sex scenes?

May 16, 2010 - 11:44 am 8 Comments

This is an excellent question!

34% of her respondents claimed they do indeed skim or skip sex scenes.  If you extrapolate the percentage to the general romance reading public, this is a significant number of readers.  You can check out the post for yourself:

http://dearauthor.com/wordpress/

Reasons given were:  too gross, too long, too boring, too acrobatic, too gratuitous, too unbelievable.

I have to admit I’m occasionally guilty of skimming or skipping.  I recently purchased several books – print books via Amazon – written by some of my go-to authors and I skipped the sex scenes.  Why?  Well, as I commented on Jane’s post, if I’m skimming or skipping the sex scenes, chances are I’m skimming or skipping most of the book, primarily out of boredom.  There is nothing more disappointing – reading-wise – than anticipating a new story or a new take on an old story, but instead discovering the same old same old has simply been repackaged, and that includes the same formulaic sex scenes.

Writing a sex scene is hard work.  Writing a good sex scene is even more hard work.  It’s a complex process and the way I see it, you have to be very involved in what you’re writing because context is everything.  There must be a realistic reason for the characters to do what they do, behave as they do.  And I believe that once the character commits to a man or a woman, the author must commit as well.  My goal is to write a scene or scenes that do justice to my characters and will involve, enthrall, and entertain my readers.  I think if an author just tosses in a gratuitous sex scene because they feel it’s required of them, the reader will recognize it and probably start to skip and skim.  I’m a fan of fade-to-black or behind closed door sex scenes if an author isn’t comfortable doing the down and dirty.  Really…it’s okay, just give me a good story.

So check out Jane’s post and leave me your comments.  I would love to hear your answers – do you skim?  If so, I really want to know why.

Beauty and the Feast, 5 Delightful Divas from Dark Diva Reviews

May 13, 2010 - 10:16 pm 3 Comments

Stacey’s Review:
Eva is a chef that loves her job. She takes pride in the food she makes and it shows. There are a lot of food and meal preparation descriptions, but rather than bore us, they stimulates our senses…and makes us hungry. At the end of the book, there are recipes and quick facts about the meals Eva makes in the book, which was a nice touch.

Eva is hired to prepare a romantic dinner for two for Gabriel Abbott and a date. When she discusses the meal plan on the phone with him, she falls for his sexy voice, just as he does for hers. Later, when they meet by accident, there is perfect chemistry between them and nothing is ever the same.
One of the biggest hurdles facing them is the fact that Eva is a simple country girl and Gabriel is wealthy and educated. Can their two worlds blend enough for them to have a life together? Can Eva trust Gabe, even though he has a past reputation as a playboy?

This book was great with many layers. Julia Barrett created characters so real that I could read about their daily activities all day and enjoy every minute of it. Not only the main characters, but the complimentary cast of secondary characters as well.
I found around the middle, I began to wonder where this book was going. Then a spiteful ex-girlfriend comes into the picture and creates all kinds of problems for our lovers and plenty of suspense for the reader!

If you enjoy a classic romance with a dose of suspense to keep you anxious, then give Beauty and the Feast a read. The sex was hot and the last scene of the book was just perfect and kept me smiling long after I closed the book. Julia Barrett is a talented author that can pull you out of reality with her writing. I look forward to her next release.

Rated 5 Delightful Divas by Stacey!

My Everything from Joyfully Reviewed.

May 12, 2010 - 8:33 am 4 Comments

From Talia Ricci at Joyfully Reviewed – This is the second book of mine they’ve reviewed, which is totally cool!  I’m reprinting it in total, even the criticism…ah well…nothing’s perfect!  I like the teenage sister I created, but c’est la vie.  Thanks, Talia!  By the way, the male cover model for My Everything, Jimmy Thomas, contacted me before he headed to RT.  He seems to be a very interesting guy and he puts out some major hot covers!

Years ago, Grace Adams and Ben McCall were in love.  Circumstances changed and they ended up not being together.  Now Grace is a widow and she loved her husband, very much, but has always felt that he deserved more than she gave him – after all Ben controlled her heart, even when married to someone else.  Now, however, Ben is back in Grace’s life and while he says they can’t have forever, Grace refuses to give up hope.

Ben McCall went undercover and into seclusion with the death of his wife and unborn child.  His type of profession is just that dangerous.  When he is called back to the States in order to help a friend in danger, Ben and his friend realize something – Ben is the one in danger.  Now he doesn’t know who to trust and when Grace Adams, the woman he has never forgotten, comes back into his life, Ben knows that he must keep her safe at all costs.

I adore reading about former lovers finding each other again.  Ben and Grace were special. Grace was strong, stubborn (almost too much) and beautiful.  She kept in touch with Ben’s family even when he left her without an explanation.  Ben, for all of his secrets, desired the warmth and companionship of a wife, one to come home to and that scared him especially when his first wife was killed.  The fact that a madman is trying to get to Grace makes Ben bonkers and I didn’t even suspect the identity of the bad guy until the very end.

I had only one problem with My Everything and that was Ben’s sister at the very end.  Too stupid to live comes to mind – especially with her inability to listen to reason, curtail her stubbornness or even do what she was supposed to do.  The end result of her actions almost ruined the entire book for me.

With a intriguing and highly suspenseful storyline and erotic love scenes that sizzle, My Everything is a good read – just ignore Ben’s sister and all will be well!

I’m a bold-faced liar. Or am I?

May 9, 2010 - 7:46 pm 18 Comments

My dear friend, author Sandra Cox, over at http://downtownya.blogspot.com/ ,the very first person to befriend me when I signed my very first contract, has called me out!  She awarded me this Creative Writer Award.

I’ll quote her:  “The award comes with strings…I have to nominate seven other creative bloggers and list either six outrageous lies about myself and one truth….or vicey versey.”

If you can tell me which statement is a lie, I will put your name in a drawing for…a copy of Captured, a copy of Beauty and the Feast, or a copy of My Everything.  Three books, three winners!  Your odds are excellent!  Just pick out the one lie.

1.  I minored in Religious Studies.

2.  I had a brief affair with a famous African author.

3.  I keep Kosher.

4.  My husband and I discovered we are distant cousins.

5.  Among other jobs, I worked as a nude model to pay my way through college.

6.  I hitched a ride with a man who turned out to be a Mafia boss.  He took a turn too fast on a steep road and the car rolled over the side, coming to rest upright and undamaged on the switchback beneath.  We kept driving.

7.  My uncle, a well-known journalist, interviewed both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones on their first North American tours.

Got it?  Let’s see who can ferret out the untruth!

I’m going to choose these great authors to continue the tradition.

1.  Fran Lee:  http://fran-lee-romance.angelfire.com/index.html

2.  Mia Watts:  http://www.miawatts.com/Mia_Watts_The_Art_of_Seduction_is_Watts_Beneath_the_Covers.html

The Geeky Bookworm and Beauty and the Feast!

May 8, 2010 - 4:01 pm 3 Comments

Review:
“I read this book a while back in my exams period and I just discovered that I totally forgot to review it in all the stress. And it totally deserves a review. I got this book from Julia and I’m so thankful she send it to me. It really made my day better and let me forget all the stress of the exams for a few hours.

What makes this book so special? I loved that the characters felt this huge attraction to each other even before they met. I think we all know that situation when you hear the voice of someone and start thinking about what he or she will look like. Or perhaps that is just me because of my job at the directory assistance.

Eva is a wonderful character. She works for a catering firm and is a really independent woman. She seems perfect and prim as in how can she be that perfect but after a bit of time we discover what makes her a real human. She has a seriously dirty mouth from time to time and I had to laugh so often just cuz of the stuff  that came out of her mouth. She loves to cook and it mostly felt like foreplay what she does with the food. I really liked her from the start.

When Gabe hears Eva’s voice for the first time he is smitten and it gets even worse when he tastes her food for the first time. I really thought that food couldn’t be such a turn on but Gabe showed me that I was wrong. He really “likes” her food and OMG how I wished I were the cook. He is one hot man and I completely understand what Eva finds so interesting and sexy about him. He has a way to talk and gesture that just makes you crave him. He’s a millionaire but is still such a nice guy.

Together these two are one nice pair. They are made for each other. They have these easy conversations and funny banters but they know how to turn up the heat, too. I’m always totally blown away how Julia creates this matching couples. I love how her couples are together and how they seem to be so real.”

Life Imitates Art in Unexpected Ways on Unexpected Trips.

May 3, 2010 - 9:10 pm 8 Comments

I find myself on a cattle ranch in the Crazies in Montana.

It’s early May.  I’m snug in the guest bedroom this night while a blizzard rages outside.  We headed out earlier to check on the cows.  They’re dropping their calves.  When we rode out, it was windy and spitting rain.  By the time we returned to the ranch house, it had begun to snow and within fifteen minutes, the snow became a howling blizzard.  Now the rancher I’m staying with has to go out again.  Two more calves were born this evening and he’ll probably have to bring them in, along with any other calf he finds that has been born in the past couple hours.  This country is rugged, harsh, beautiful.  Here, life is pared down to two simple facts, life and death.  I saw the death pile earlier – the cows who died giving birth, the smallest calf of a set of triplets that died before the rancher could get to it.  Their dark carcasses are piled in a small ravine.  Scavengers will take care of them eventually.

It’s serendiptous that Siren recently contracted for Anytime Darlin’, a romance-suspense involving a cattle rancher up here in the Crazies.  One of the pivotal scenes is set here during calving season – in a late spring blizzard.

I know the Crazies because we’ve been coming here for five years to spend time on a neighboring  cattle ranch.  I’m not the best at driving cattle.  I merely do what I’m told and stay out of the way of the people who know what they’re doing.  Last year I was surprised when the owner, who happens to be a woman, told me to round up the stragglers and get them beyond the last fence, all by myself.  I was even more surprised that I managed it without incident.

Tomorrow, we’ll be up at 6 a.m.  Weather permitting, I’ll borrow a horse and we’ll ride out to cut some heifers and a couple dozen steers that have been sold.  We have to bring them down out of the foothills to the pens near the hay barn.  It will just be four of us.  This oughta be interesting…

Penelope’s Book Review – Beauty and the Feast.

May 2, 2010 - 9:26 pm 6 Comments
A Delicious Review from Penelope at Penny Romance

“I’m obviously someone who recognizes the sensuality of food…I made the hero and heroine of my first novel (Sweet Inspiration) pastry chefs. When I saw Mandi’s review for Beauty and the Feast, I knew I had to read it. The heroine is a caterer and the hero falls in lust with her before they’ve ever met, just by tasting the incredible meal she has prepared for him. Holy Mother…the food descriptions in this book are to die for! Check out the first course…chilled melon soup: “…pureed honey melon, a tiny bit of sea salt, a few splashes of a light German Riesling, a squeeze of lime, half a seeded Serrano chili, cilantro and a bit of palm sugar…” Starving yet? You will be if you read this baby. Make sure you have a gourmet snack and a nice bottle of wine on hand. I am not kidding.
I love the fact that Barrett has these characters becoming interested in each other without them even meeting. Just the sound of their voices over the phone peaks their interest. Then, Gabe smells Eva’s scent on his pillow and knows she’s laid down on his bed. He starts falling for her after eating the sensual meal she has created for him. This is a great way to start the romantic tension in a book….using other senses to create an attraction between two characters.
Here’s a quote that sums it up best….”His interest in Eva Raines had once again grown in direct proportion to the size of his erection, the erection induced by the images tasting her food brought to mind.”
I really loved this sexy book…I loved the characters, the setting, the food descriptions (of course). It was adorable, right down to the recipes at the end. Bravo, Julia Barrett!”
Grade: A-
Thanks!  I am humbled by her review.

Night Owl Reviews – A Reviewer Top Pick!

April 26, 2010 - 8:35 pm 6 Comments

Beauty and the Feast, by Julia Rachel Barrett

Genre(s): Contemporary, Romance

Night Owl Top Pick
Eva is a caterer and Napa Valley chef, as well as the only daughter in a family of five children. One evening Eva is hired by Gabriel Abbot to cook dinner for himself and his gal. This dinner sets off a chain of events that leads to Eva cooking more dinners for him and a big attraction between them. When Eva gets in a motorcycle wreck Gabriel is there for her.Beauty and the Feast was a fun read with a wonderful plot. The romance was sizzling and the food descriptions tantalizing. I enjoyed the progression of Gabriel and Eva’s relationship. The characters were a bit original, yet also very relatable. This is a feel good story that will leave you warm and comfy.

Thanks!

Welcome my friend, author Fran Lee!

April 22, 2010 - 10:24 pm 7 Comments

Thanks for inviting me over to your place, Julia!  I love reading your blog. Now I get to play over here! Yay!

You asked me to give your readers a glimpse into the creation of the characters in my latest novella, “Nothing but Sex”, and to talk a bit about how they came to be. If you have read any of my books, you will notice that I tend to create characters that are as real and down to earth as you and me…and almost always with a humorous streak. Whether the hero is a hard-as-nails pro wrestler like David Chance in Out of Her Dreams, or a hard-working Native American rancher like Mike Running Elk in Nothing but Sex, my heroes are men with needs, wants, and insecurities just like every male in existence. These men are not perfect specimens. They sweat. They breathe. It isn’t unusual for my heroes to walk into the bathroom while the heroine is brushing her teeth and lift the lid to take a leak without bothering to ask if it’s okay with her. My heroes are just…guys. Even my alpha heroes sometimes need a kick in the pants to realize they are alpha. But once they realize what they want and need, they go after it with a vengeance.

I was surrounded by “guys” my entire life. Growing up, I had three male cousins who were all as alpha and as rock-headed as they come, and they drove my sister and I nuts. They were never wrong. They were never patient. And they were always getting into mischief and trouble. After my own sons were born, they followed the same path, and made life hell for their poor little sister. LOL! I firmly believe that in at least five of my many past lives, I was male. I was the worst tom-boy growing up. I asked for farm sets and ranch sets instead of dolls at Christmas. I never played with other girls. They were wussy! J

I can easily create a hero for my books by simply fishing into my memory banks and picking out the personality I am searching for, and then running with it.

My heroines are always just a little bit…me. Stubborn, loving to a fault. Self conscious and unaware of how others see them as people or lovers. Some of them are downright tomboy…others are alpha females. One of my novels from Resplendence (A Brief Moment of Pleasure) is about a female blackbelt in the traditional Japanese Martial Arts. She’s a toughie. But the hero is just tough enough to catch her. My heroines are normal, down to earth, and charismatic. And often I draw on my own real life experiences to plot my books.

No…that does not mean I do all the stuff that I write (grin) even though I would love to.  It simply means that something that happened in my past triggers a plot in my head, and I sit down to write.  I never plot out a book. I take an idea and start running with it, and never look back. While I write, I am “inside” my character’s heads. I am coming from their point of view. I use the language they would normally use, and that sometimes drives my editor nutty. When my well educated writer is thinking and talking, I use proper grammar and syntax. But when my hero thinks and talks, I use his point of view and voice.

I sometimes have an editor e-mail and ask why he swears so much. Why the heroine uses “frigging” while the hero uses the four-letter vulgar equivalent. LOL!  How many guys use the watered down term? Hmmm?  Most guys talk dirty when they are alone or in their own mind, and only clean it up when they have to. If in mixed company most will shift from WTF to “what the heck”. But not when they are alone or blissfully without a female audience.

I can’t write stuffy characters. It’s a mental and physical impossibility for me. I write what I know. I write what I feel. And I write what I like to see happen between my H/H.  I am very careful to round out my characters with background as I write, but I have noticed lately that there are readers who seem to skim right over the “filler” that gives them important info about the characters, and sets the scene for why they do what they do…and these readers are telling me that the story never explained how something happened. Or they didn’t get why the character did this or that.  I have to tell you…never skim in my books. If you do, you will miss something that is integral and important, and will come away thinking “Huh?”

When I put an entire story into less than 75 pages, the story is packed with loads of backstory, and loads of info. If you skim, you will undoubtedly miss a lot of that.

Nothing but Sex is a tight, fast paced 63 page novella that is a part of the Cougar Challenge Series. I believe that mine will be the tenth in the series, and is a stand-alone novella that can be read without reading the other nine…but I highly recommend that readers check out the others. The authors are hot and the books are great.

Here is a blurb and an excerpt:

Lee Blackhorse is hardly Cougar material, no matter what her friends over at Tempt the Cougar say. A forty-two-year-old woman who lusts after her thirty-year-old weekend helper is just plain nuts. Or is she? She’s been secretly hot for the man for years.

Mike Running Elk is the hottest thing ever to don tight jeans and a second-skin t-shirt…and he has no problem seeing himself in the role of lover. In fact, if he can just get the hot-as-hell woman to realize he’s plenty old enough to ring her bells, he plans to do more than just clean her barn and mow her grass. He’s waited for her long enough.

When her Saturday helper appears at her door with an injured hand, Lee can’t pull her eyes off his naked, ripped chest. And from her heated gaze, Mike can’t believe she’s as oblivious as she acts. The ice has been broken and he intends to heat things up even more…

Mike swore foully as he caught his glove on one of the murderously long barbs on the roll of wire fencing that he was trying to move and he tugged his leather work glove off to find that the barb had made it through to his palm. He shook his head and shoved his hair back from his face with his other hand before he tugged his unused handkerchief from his back pocket and wrapped it around his hand, which did very little to staunch the flow of blood. Swearing at his own clumsiness, he headed across the wide work yard to the back porch and stepped inside, knocking on the inside screen door.

She appeared from the archway to the living room, her face pink and her lower lip caught between her teeth as she caught sight of him and he realized that he hadn’t bothered to pull his damn shirt back on. He saw the way her eyes darkened as they slid over his body and he felt a shot of anticipation run from his gut to his cock. Her lips were full. Her eyes were smoky blue. A small vein throbbed in her throat. And it struck him forcibly that she most certainly was as aware of him as he was of her.

But before he could wrap his mind around her reaction to him, she was hurrying up the stairs to the bathroom and he was following, his appreciative eyes on the lush swell of her generous, gorgeous ass as he held the tea towel she had just handed him tightly to his bleeding hand. Sweet Jesus, but he loved her ass. He had loved it ever since he’d first seen her, when he was just eighteen, and he had asked her if he could do some odd jobs around the place to make some cash every week. Right after his dad had died. Watching her walk around in tight jeans had made him forget a lot of the pain in his life back then.

She filled a pair of jeans like they’d been poured onto her. His mouth watered and his cock grew impossibly harder. Even the stinging pain in his hand couldn’t distract his attention from that ass.

As she entered the bathroom and stretched up to the shelf above the toilet to lift down the first-aid kit, he almost whimpered. Was she trying to kill him? If she didn’t stop wiggling around, he was gonna blow.

“I can handle it from here,” he grated as she opened the box and started to take the soaked tea towel out of his grip. But she shoved his free hand away and gently placed his hand in the sink, rinsing it with icy-cold tap water that nearly made him yell at the pain. He stared down at her bent head as she probed and cleaned the wound and each time her body brushed his, he almost lost it.

He lost track of what was happening with his hand as every drop of blood in his body raged into his groin, threatening to explode. Maybe that was a good thing, because his hand might stop bleeding.

“I still think we need to get you to the clinic and get this stitched. It’s way too jagged to heal right, and it’s still bleeding.”

Her words were lost in the hot muddle of his emotions and body. But when she looked up into his face, he forced himself to pay attention. “Hold this clean towel in your palm. Press it tight. I’ll get my car keys.”

Building Emotional Depth in an Erotic Romanc, Guest Post by Tina Donohue.

April 19, 2010 - 6:45 am 15 Comments

But first, the important stuff. J Yes, I’m hosting a scavenger hunt today. Periodically, I’ll be posting four questions here and at my site. You’ll find the rules and choice of prizes at www.tinadonahue.com Just click on the scavenger hunt link on the home page!

Now, to my post:

Yes, building emotional depth in an erotic romance can be done. What’s more, it should be.

We’ve all read erotic romances in which the couple go at each other like there’s no tomorrow because she thinks he’s hot and he’s drooling over her great rack, big blue eyes and legs longer than the state of California.

While the sex might be well written and definitely brings a flush to our cheeks, we feel vaguely dissatisfied when the story’s over. Why? It certainly isn’t for lack of carnal acrobatics. It’s because we didn’t feel emotionally connected to the people inhabiting the book. We learned so little about them except that they liked sex and each other. We had no idea what makes them laugh or cry. . .what moves them emotionally. More importantly, what brought them to this point in the story.

In my latest release, Lush Velvet Nights, I wanted to give Nathan some baggage so he’d be afraid to love again and to commit. His fear of true intimacy with Adriana is what fuels their story and causes her to fight for his love, knowing he cares for her deeply. I believe it adds richness to the sexual content.

Here’s a blurb and an excerpt to illustrate what I mean:

Lush Velvet Nights – When wanton desires & love demand all…

During the day, Adriana’s a lonely corporate heiress, helming a supermarket empire. At night, she hires escorts, scripting provocative fantasies of kidnapping, lust, submission and endless longing. It’s all she has to excite her until she meets Nathan Wynn. Tall, blond and muscular—like a modern-day Viking—Nathan’s a labor relations attorney representing Adriana’s union employees. His imposing presence intensifies her basest desires. When he protects her from an escort he believes is an attacker, she knows he’s wonderfully dominant and unrestrained. Fascinated by Adriana’s underlying sensuality, Nathan brings her to his secluded mountain estate, determined she submit fully to his hunger. At a gentleman’s club, he makes certain she denies him nothing. Engaging in a seductive sexual journey, Nathan’s caught off-guard by his stunning need for Adriana. An attraction he fears because of past events in his life. A growing emotional connection she will not let him deny.

EXCERPT:

(In this scene, Adriana learns Nathan’s daughter from his failed marriage wasn’t really his child – a matter he didn’t realize until the girl was two years old. Adriana tries to draw him out but he’s resistant, wanting to keep their relationship light, sexual. . .it provides the conflict and the depth):

Uneasiness flooded her features. “You took a call as I left the elevator. Was Echo expecting you?”

He stepped back with the name, a familiar pain settling in the center of his chest. “What?”

“Was she your date? Did something happen and she couldn’t make it?”

Head lowered, he pretended to fish his keys from his pocket. “No and no.”

“Is she your wife? Do you have a wife?”

His face lifted. Her obvious worry tempered his surprise and irritation at the intrusion into his private life he never shared with anyone. “No, I’m divorced and blissfully single.”

Her expression still questioned.

The words came before he could stop them. “Echo’s my daughter.”

Adriana’s brows lifted. “I didn’t know you had a child.”

“I don’t.”

Confusion swept over her features, narrowing her eyes. “You just said you did.”

True. An automatic response he couldn’t seem to overcome even after all the years separating him and Echo. Cursing himself for telling Adriana anything, he decided to explain and get it out of the way so they could concentrate on their weekend. “Until Echo was two I believed she was mine. A few months after Hayley and I got divorced, she married Echo’s biological father. Echo has his genes, but I’ll always consider her my daughter.”

Rarely had Adriana witnessed the level of pain she saw on Nathan’s face and heard in his voice. Heart aching, she longed to gather him in her arms and offer whatever comfort she could. Instinct advised her to back off and keep quiet. He didn’t need to confess humiliating details of his ex cheating on him and keeping his daughter’s paternity a secret for two years.

Good god. How in the world could any woman do such a horrible thing to a man, or rather, two men? Hadn’t she seen the unconditional love on Nathan’s face the first time he held Echo and felt her weight, marveled at her warmth and indulged in the wondrous scent of her skin? Hadn’t she cared about her lover and what she’d deprived him of? Lost moments he’d never get back…their daughter’s first step, tooth, smile, words.

The enormity of her betrayal consumed Adriana’s thoughts and stole her ability to make small talk.

Fifteen minutes into their ride, the steady hush of air from the car’s heater mingled with the swishing windshield wipers and an Anita Baker CD. The singer’s rich voice was grown-up and womanly, the way Adriana sensed Nathan liked his females. Anita’s signature style added unmistakable seduction to the songs.

Nathan eased the Rover to a stop behind a long line of cars and glanced over. “Temperature all right?”

In the glare of headlights coming from the opposite direction, his blond hair appeared much lighter, his expression neutral, his previous pain dismissed or suppressed.

Adriana caught a glimpse of it in his dark eyes. He seemed so young suddenly, hurting and lost. Tenderness surged through her. Prudently, she kept it from her voice, not wanting to sound as though she pitied him. “Actually, I’ve already turned off the heater on my seat. I’m a little warm.”

He glanced at how his parka shrouded her. “The coat does come off.” His face lifted. “So do your clothes.”

Her heart leapt at his change from hurt to hungry and the surprising seriousness in his eyes. “You expect me to strip in here?”

With a smile, he turned back to the traffic. Rain pounded the windshield and roof. The music and Anita’s voice enticed. “You said you were warm.”

“We could turn down the heat.”

His hand stopped hers from adjusting it. “I’m not hot.”

Liar. His fingers burned against hers.

“Go on,” he said, running his thumb over the back of her hand prior to releasing it. “Take the parka off …for a start.”

Defiantly, she crossed her arms over her chest, refusing him. She liked the bulkiness of his coat, especially on a wintry night filled with dark promise. Its fabric held his masculine scent, arousing and comforting. Its heaviness reminded her of his arm around her waist, his large body intimidating yet protective.

He flicked on his turn signal and eased his Rover into the next, faster lane. “Suit yourself. For now.”

And later? What then? Her sprinting pulse and uncivilized thoughts answered. Images unwound in her mind of Nathan using his size to overpower and tame her, imprisoning her arms above her head, his knees spreading her thighs, their naked bellies touching, his sex seeking hers as he taught her surrender and submission to their basest needs. Her throat went dry. After a brief struggle, she managed a swallow and a reasonably steady voice. “What happens when we arrive?”

He accelerated, jockeying the Rover into another lane. “I’m going to strip you bare and enjoy every inch of you with my mouth, hands and cock.”

His casual tone made his promise all the more lewd. Blood thudded in her ears. Her eyes darted to him.

Undoubtedly sensing her scrutiny, he looked over. Headlights exposed his expression and eyes. A mixture of feral lust and human need sparkled in them. “Are you afraid?”

“Should I be?”

His expression got devilish. “You sound like an attorney.”

“No, I don’t. You dodge questions much better than I ever could. Like the one I just asked.”

Brows lifting, he glanced back at the cars moving at a crawl. “You have nothing to fear no matter what we do. I’d never harm you.”

Puzzled at his comment, Adriana straightened and leaned toward him, her hand settling on his upper arm. Despite his suit jacket and topcoat, she could still feel his impressive biceps. “Of course you wouldn’t. I wouldn’t be here if I thought otherwise. You’re not that type of man.”

He flicked his gaze at her then watched the car in front. “Outside of negotiating a contract for your union workers and slugging fake kidnappers, you don’t know what kind of man I am.”

“I have a fair idea. Are you trying to talk me out of this?”

Although he’d stopped again with the clogged traffic, he kept his attention on the vehicles ahead. “I don’t want you to have any illusions about me.”

Was her interest so obvious? Did he believe she wanted to make more of this than it would ever be? Her hand slipped from his arm, an almost too quick reaction. To compensate, she made her voice breezy. “Such as?”

“What happened with Hayley wasn’t her fault. It was mine, no matter what you’ve been thinking.”

Adriana hadn’t expected him to bring the subject up again or to be so blunt. She settled back in her seat. “I wasn’t thinking anything.”

“A little advice.” He turned his face to hers. “Don’t ever play poker. You don’t hide your emotions all that well.”

Disconcerted, she mumbled, “Really.”

“Yeah, really. Like your current indignation.” His voice teased. “You’d like me to shut up.”

She lied. “Not at all.”

Giving her a scolding look, Nathan accelerated with the rest of the traffic. “That’s exactly what you want. Believe me, you’re easy to read. Earlier, in the conference room, your attention kept drifting. Each time I saw you staring at me, I thought you were interested, at least until we got to the garage… I didn’t know about Fred showing up.”

She muttered, “His name’s Ed. Although he probably prefers Max.”

“Were you fantasizing about him?”

A quick blush scalded her cheeks. Thankfully, the dark kept him from noticing, and her unease didn’t show in her voice. “I didn’t know who the agency was sending. I can’t fantasize about someone I don’t know.”

“Your image of him then.”

Uncomfortable with the conversation’s direction, she wanted to hedge and figured he’d just keep asking until he got the truth, which he could apparently read on her face. “Actually, I was thinking about a Viking.” She added no more, not about to confess he’d been the inspiration.

His head swung to her, pausing briefly and returned to his lane. “You like football players?”

Adriana’s laugh broke free before she could stop it.

“I take it that means no?”

Still giggling, she answered. “Not a Minnesota Viking, the real ones from history. And no, I loathe sports. I learned them to please my dad, but…” Her words and laughter halted as she recalled the stats she’d memorized, the plays she’d studied and dissected so she could discuss them with her father, a rabid fan. Her efforts went unnoticed. During the games, he surrounded himself with a group of his male VPs, relieving him of having to deal with her on all but the most superficial level, just like an employee.

She remembered the look in Nathan’s eyes earlier, the anguish in his voice as he’d said Echo’s name. She tried to imagine her father having the same depth of feeling for her and could not. Sorrow at a loss she’d endured all of her life deadened her voice. “Sports bored me to death.” Sighing deeply, she turned down the heater’s fan and continued, unable to help herself. “My father and I were never close, no matter how hard I tried to please him. I don’t believe he ever really wanted me as you obviously still want Echo. I just don’t understand how you could think what happened was your fault. Stop me if I’m out of line here, but did you cheat on Hayley before she cheated on you?”

The last strains of music faded, leaving only the sound of pelting rain and beating wipers. Nathan’s eyes flicked to the CD player then back to the road. He put on his right turn signal and edged through traffic to the slowest lane. The Rover’s headlights shone on the street sign indicating the next exit, an overpass miles from the turn-off they should be taking.

Adriana’s stomach sank with disappointment. Did he plan to get off and head back to L.A. because of her out-of-line question?

“No, I didn’t cheat on her,” he said.

*** By bringing in their past and their vulnerabilities, I believe it made their journey to love – and the sex scenes – that much deeper and richer.

A Brief Moment of Pleasure, by Fran Lee

April 17, 2010 - 10:59 pm 6 Comments

I’m not all that good at book reviews and I suck at uploading covers.

Normally, I prefer to let others express their opinion on a book.  However, author Fran Lee gifted me a copy of her book, A Brief Moment of Pleasure, to take with me on my trip and I have to say, the book is a delight.  It’s a joy to read a story about a woman who can hold her own, not in the business world for a change, but in the world of martial arts.  Fran Lee makes it clear that the world of Japanese martial arts continues, even now, to be primarily a world of men.  A woman has to work two or three times as hard as a man to be recognized and respected for her achievements and abilities.  The really cool thing about this story is I know the author, herself, is indeed a respected martial artist and she has stood in her heroine, Lisa’s shoes.  My question is…did she have a hot guy like James Rhee panting at her stiletto heels?  Hmmm?  Do tell!!!

The story is unique and the author’s sincere voice comes through.  Lisa’s relationship with James develops at a realistic pace.  The reader shares Lisa’s frustration – she wants the man in her bed with a deep passion, but he’s her boss.  First and foremost, she wants to earn his respect.  She has no intention of becoming his plaything – Lisa wants more than a brief moment of pleasure.  The story is sweet and serious at times, laugh out loud funny at others.  The bedroom scenes are smoking hot.  The book is one where you can flat out lose yourself in romance for a few days!

Unfortunately, Asian heroes are rare in our contemporary romance novels.  I hope James Rhee is the exception that proves the rule.

Do Your Heroines Wax?

April 16, 2010 - 11:19 pm 14 Comments

Inquiring Minds Want to Know…

SmokinghotBooks has a hilarious, laugh out loud, post on waxing – reading it actually brought tears to my eyes – tears of amusement and memories of a shared painful experience.  You can read it for yourself!  http://smokinhotbooks.com/blog/

Do your heroines wax?  I have to say I avoid the subject altogether in my books.  I guess I let the reader be the judge.  I assume Mari in Captured does not as she’s trapped on an alien world.  I’m betting Eva does – as part of her makeover for a night out with Gabe – in Beauty and the Feast.  Grace in My Everything?  Probably not as she’s a pretty pragmatic woman and she’s still in mourning but…you never know!  Devlin Barre in Anytime Darlin’?  No friggin’ way – she’s a farm girl, but I know for sure she shaves her pits and her legs!

The heroines of Daughters of Persephone?  Seven hells no!  They have other things on their minds, you know, little, insignificant things like saving the human race!  Lira in my WIP?  Oh yeah, she’s a princess, the heir to the throne of Zhinshu.  Of course she waxes!

Waxing involves a willingness to submit yourself to torture.  No kidding.  All in the name of femalescaping, as opposed to manscaping which I am opposed to unless the man has hair sprouting from every single follicle on his entire body.  As I commented on the above post – my esthetician does torture me, but she does it in a good way.  I tell myself to think of the results…think of the results…think of the results.

Somebody who shall remain nameless, reports that waxing exposes certain soft and appealing curves in places on a woman’s body that normally lack for male attention.  I kind of enjoy that gently descriptive opinion on the issue.  :)

What’s your take?
